Sarlat in Novemner

We are comsidering visiting Sarlat the first week in November. I realize this is not the best weather for the Dordogne but am wondering if there will be enoigh open to keep us busy. We would also enjoy some cycling, will there be bike rentals still open? The good thing is prices for apartment rentals drop significantly.

We are from Seattle and used to the rain.

There are 15 major sites of the Perigord-Quercy region, including the caves at Lascaux II in Montignac (very near to Sarlat). Most of the caves are open in November - although admittedly not every day of the week.

The sites are:

Chateaux: Biron (open all year except January), Bourdeilles (open all year except January), Losse (closed in November), Fenelon (Sainte-Mondane (closed in November), Puymartin (between Les Eyzies and Sarlat and with limited opening in November), Monbazillac (limited opening in November)

Cloitre (cloisters) de Cadouin (open all the year except January)

Grotte du Grand Roc and Abri de Laugerie Basse (both in Les Eyzies and open in November), Gouffre de Padirac (Padirac - closes early November), Le Pech Merle (Cabrerets - ?open in November), Grotte de Lascaux II (open in November), Le Thot (open in November) (both near Montignac), Les Jardins du Manoir d'Eyrignac (at Salignac-Eyvigues and open all year round), Les Jardins de l'Imaginaire (Terrasson-Lavilledieu - closed in November),

Have a look at www.semitour.com to confirm the opening times or google the individual sites.

I hope this helps

Most things will be on pretty short operating hours - both because there's not much demand, and because it will be dark by 5:30-6:00 pm -- not dusk, not sunset -- dark.

It will be anywhere from quite cool to a possibility of snow -- so not sure the weather would really be fit to cycle, either.

Average temperatures in Dordogne area:

Snow in early November would be very unusual.

sorry, didn't see the "early" -- snow flurries in late November are certainly possible - -but it can be blimming cold and wet and miserable in early November

The last several years have not correlated even remotely to those averages -- all of my friends scattered across the Dordogne have had a lot of very cold, very snowy winters in recent years.

We had friends staying with us here (Sarlat) last oct/nov and they cycled often. The weather was cool but clear with the odd rainy day. Things have started to close or are on reduced hours but in early nov there is still enough open to make it worthwhile.
