Porto Vecchio - Calvi

We are staying in Porto Vecchio for a week in June but then have a nother week to travel the island. Thinking of going to Calvi for a couple of days then St Florent and fly back from Bastia.

Which is the best route to Calvi (bearing in mind small hire car) up to Corte through the mountains or the longer distance route up the N198 , 193 and 197. Any idea on timings would be very helpful - we also thought about staying the night in Corte.

Many Thanks

Quicker and more scenic via corte, though not all that montainous (you see them but don't go over them). It'll take you about 3 hours, so no need for an overnight stop unless you want one, to take a walk up those mountains!

The best route as balanina suggest is the N198 tio Aleria and then the N200 to Corte - google gives the time as just over 2 hours, but it's always optimistc for Corsica and one might wish to stop occasionally. I wonder, however, if the questioner meant going into the heart of the mountains - there are a couple of routes to choose from, but it's not for the faint hearted! You could also consider a smaller detour via the Col de Bavella.

Or, indeed, a longer detour from Corte over the top to the west coast at Porto and then up the coast - that is MUCH slower, will take you all of a tiring day, but the MOST spectacular scenery. But not, as Aardvark says, for those with large cars or vertigo. The roads are not the tiniest nor terribly steep, however, just rather narrow and very windy. In June it will be fantastic because you will hardly meet any traffic. You can't go fast - max speed around 40kph, often slower - so they aren't dangerous - most accidents in Corsica occur on the straight east coast road because there is more traffic and people go too fast (and overtake insanely). If you're not into mountain driving, however, I'd skip it.
