Civitavecchia to Spoleto by car or train

Hi,

We are doing a cruise that starts and ends in Rome in September. We are then staying in Spoleto for 5 nights, undecided if to get a train to Spoleto or hire a car from the Port and drive, this way we will have a car to do the country side and visit Assisi, etc. Hire car excess puts me off a bit. Has anyone experience hiring car from the Port, and if so any recommendations would be appreciated. Would it be easier to hire a car from the port or get a train then hire a car from Spoleto. Do we really need a car in Spoleto.

Thankyou in advance.

For flexibility then having the car would be your best option. The drive to Spoleto from Civitavecchia will be quite straight forward and most of it on super highway.

The area around Spoleto is lovely and easy to navigate for day trips.

Have a look at www.autoeurope.co.uk for car rental options.

There are no trains from Civitavecchia direct to Spoleto. You would have to change trains in Rome, with a total travel time of around 3 hours.

To drive from Civitavecchia to Spoleto would take about 2 hours, but reply #1 is incorrect about the super highway. The drive would be cross-country on ordinary country roads, but not at all difficult,
