1. Re: coach or bus travel

There is no sensible coach or bus route. The very infrequent direct buses are currently suspended.

Take a 99 express airport bus (every 30 minutes during the day to Nice Ville station for €6. At the station, buy a ticket to Ventimigllia (Vintimille in French) for €7.10 - no advance reductions, no reserved seats, ticket is OK on any of these trains …ter-sncf.com/Images/Paca/Tridion/fh_4_site_… - validate before boarding.

In Ventimiglia, buy another ticket to San Remo - €2.70 on Regional trains (validate before boarding, €7.50 on Intercity trains. See www.trenitalia.com clicking the UK flag first for times.

With light luggage, cheaper alternatives include train from Nice St.Augustin station, ten minutes walk from Terminal 1 (route on Nice airport website), and bus from Ventimiglia to San Remo (€1.50 bought in train station bar) every 15 minutes during the day - takes 40 minutes but runs to San Remo centre rather than the more distance train station location.

For buses in that area, see lines 34-37 on www.rivieratrasporti.it/OrarioEstivo2013.pdf plus rtpiemonte.it/orario_estivo2013_imperia_cune…

In my opinion, only Pieve di Teco is even remotely practical as a location to stay in without a car. If you are intending winter visits, make sure you have excellent heating and insulation. it may be near the Riviera coastline, but inland is very cold for half the year and Italian fuel costs are high..

Taking the train from Nice to San Remo is easy, but a bit tedious. Because the two cities are in two different countries, you need to take the SCNF train from Nice to Ventimille (as spelt by the French) and then another train from Ventimiglia to San Remo with Trenitalia. There are vending machines at both Nice and Ventimiglia and I found that using these machines was preferable to queuing up, as the queues at both stations were huge. Nice is a very busy and congested station, to make sure you leave sufficient time to buy tickets and get to the right platform.

When the train arrives in San Remo, whether you are coming from the east or the west, you go through a long tunnel. In 2001 the train line was relocated from being immediately beside the sea to nearly 1km inland. There are only two platforms at San Remo, but they are approximately 900 metres from the entrance to the station. There are a series of moving walkways, but they are rarely all functioning. Using a mixture of walking and using the walkways takes approximately 10 minutes to get from the platforms to the entrance.

The station is approximately 1km out of town, but it is all flat and easy walking. Buses are cheap in San Remo with a ticket that is valid for 90 minutes costing only €1.50 if you buy it from the bus station or a Tabacchi. If you buy one on board a bus it will cost €2.50. It is possible to buy several tickets and just use them as you need them. Remember that when you enter the bus for the first time, then you must stamp it in the yellow machine on the bus, else you will get fined if an inspector checks your ticket and it is not stamped.

There is a bus going directly from Nice Airport Terminal 1 to San Remo, arriving at Piazza Colombo. Four times a day in the season, and twice a day in the winter. Check out at Volpi.it

The Volpi bus service has been suspended completely for most of this year, and before its suspension had already been reduced to only one bus a day. The timetable for this one bus remains on the Volpi website, complete with a rolling banner line saying "Linea non in servizio".
