RIva or bellagio

If we were to choose to spend 3 days in the lake district in Italy , which is a better destination - more picturesque and more enjoyable ?

You really can't go wrong with either location. They are both lovely and have many oportunities for day trips. Riva del Garda has ferry service to lovely little towns on the lake as well as bus trips to towns in the mountain. The main difficulty with Riva is arrival and departure if you do not have a car. The only way into Riva del Garda on mass transit is by bus. You get the train to Rovereto, Verona or several towns at the south end of the lake then take a bus to Riva del Garda--approximately 2 hrs. Bellagio is much more convenient with access to trains from Varenna and then it is only a short ferry ride to Bellagio. The longer version is a train to Como and a bus or ferry to Bellagio. Have done both and it depends upon your preference for a train or bus. Both lakes are beautiful and both towns are wonderful places to spend some time. .
