What's the weather like in Riva?

Hi, we're going to Riva del Garda in a fortnight and have been watching the weather forecast. It seems to have lots of thunderstorms and rain from what we've seen which worries us slightly!

Is it very temperamental? Would you say we needed to pack jackets/coats/cardigans/umbrellas? I had planned on shorts and t-shirts with it being late June/early July.

Hi, yes the weather can be very temperamental. There are often summer thunderstorms which are thankfully short-lived, but I always pack a lightweight rainproof jacket and an umbrella and carry them around with me.

At the end of June/early July it isn't likely to be cold so there's no need for a heavy coat/jacket just for day-to-day wear, but if you are planning to take an excursion up into the Dolomites then you may need a cardigan or jacket as it will be a lot cooler up there. You may also need a cardigan or jacket if you plan to use the boats a lot and want to sit in the open-deck areas. It can be breezy out on the water!

This will give you an idea of what to expect with the weather:

Temperamental is a very good description. Thing is about the lake is that Riva in the North can be heavily influenced by the Alpine weather to the north. It is not usual to have different weather patterns betwen the north and south.

The local weather forecasts e.g. on www.meteo.it and www.ilmeteo.it can be taken with a pinch of salt anything more than a couple of days in advance.

Heavy thunderstorms are not unusual and are generally after a longer term of really hot weather. As said above Invariably short-lived but can be extremely heavy. June/July you are more often than not safe from the biblical Hail storms (normally May) - again short-lived
