Dear nicnyberg,

You could think about taking a train from Roma directly to Pompei FS Train Station. Then you can walk around 15 minutes through downtown Pompei and then turn left when you reach the huge cathedral a couple of blocks in front of the train station.

The Anfiteatro Entrance (as opposed to the main entrance) to Pompei Scavi is around 100m left from the front of the big church.:

You could take a Fri-Sat and non-holiday 7am direct bus from Roma Tiburtina FS Train Station to Pompei Scavi for around €16. You need to buy your ticket a day or more before you travel:

From Pompei to Ravello, you'd need to take a several buses. One route would be to exit Pompei Scavi out of the main entrance to take the Circumvesuviana Train from Pompei Scavi/Villa dei Misteri to Sorrento. Then you could take a SITA bus from Sorrento Circumvesuviana Train Station to Amalfi. Then you could take a SITA bus from Amalfi to Ravello. Otherwise, you could take a SITA bus or a train to Salerno FS Train Station. Then you could take a ferry or a bus to Amalfi from either the Salerno FS Train Station or from the stop on Corso Garibaldi under the orange and black Snaidero sign across two streets from Salerno Piazza della Concordia. Then you could take a SITA bus to Ravello:

(these schedules will change by June 1)

Amalfi runs some ferries to Capri during the Summer so you'd need to take a bus from Ravello to Amalfi:

For the SITA buses and the Circumvesuviana Train, you need to buy your ticket before boarding and in the case for the buses, you can buy tickets at any tobacconist or sometimes in bars and at newsstands. If you need to take a series of SITA buses and the Circumvesuviana Train, you can tell the tobacconist your final destination and will be given the proper ticket which would be good on the buses and the train you need to take. You would just need to stamp your ticket on the first bus or train you take. If you run out of time on your ticket, you'll need to buy another one to get to your next destination. Ticket inspectors sometimes board buses and will check tickets and if the ticket has expired, the inspector will fine you something like €30.

The buses tend to be pretty crowded in July-August and especially on Sundays.

Buona Fortuna...
