Transport to and around Positano and the Bay of Naples

Hi, we are first time visitors to Positano at end September. We usually hire a car when we travel, but reading various forums and websites, realise that probably isn't a good idea in this part of Italy. Any suggestions, reliable companies, websites that we could look at for transport options? We need to get from and to Naples airport, but would also like to do day trips to Naples, Pompeii/Herculaneum and Capri. We are happy to use public transport if available. Thanks in advance, Abigail

As regards public transportation from the airport you should take to buses, the first to Sorrento and the other to Positano.

If you want to take a private car get a quote from the car agencies and then make your choise.

Personally I used Transferelax for my vacation.

From Positano to Capri there is ferry connection.

To reach Pompei and Ercolano you should take again the bus to Sorrento and then the train.

Sorrento is a better base if you are goign to primarliy tour Bay of Naples sights as it appears. Positano and the Amalfi coast are better bases if you are goign ther to chill and stay there. it takes 30 min on the bus (without waiting time) to get fron Positano to Sorrento. Then for example it takes another 30 min to get to Pompeii form Sorrento. So staying in Positano adds an hour a day to transprot time to the Bay of Naples attractions.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful messages. Yes, with hindsight realise that Sorrento would have been a better place to base ourselves, but love the idea of being in Positano. Hope to divide our time between sightseeing and chilling locally, so hopefully we can still have best of both worlds!

If you need a driver I highly recommend http://www.amalficoastdestination.com/. I've used them for two trips (three weeks ago and three years ago) and their drivers were wonderful.

You can always stay in Positano and use the hydrofoils around to Sorrento - far more scenic than the crowded SITA bus and way less expensive than private drivers who cost and arm and a leg (money better spent at a nice restaurant or on some ceramics to take home!)
