driving directions

we are planning on renting a car in naples, driving to pompeii and then down to positano. we will probably leave the car in the parking lot at positano for the 2 days we are there- and take the SITA bus around.

does anyone have driving directions from

1) naples to pompeii

2) pompeii to positano

and also any info on parking in positano. we are staying at the albergo casa albertina which is on via travollozza (sp!)

For the driving directions please use www.viamichelin.com, this website is very good.

For the parking there are a couple of them, the biggest is Mandara, however ask to the hotel some time they have special contract with the garages and you can have a better deal.

That's not a lot of driving. We drove throughout Italy in a renta car, but left it parked at the hotel in Sorrento while we took one of many tour buses to Pompei. Our hotel even recommended that we take a taxi or bus down the Amalfi coast. In '99 we visited Capri by ferry from Sorrento. In May 2004 we drove down the Amalfi coast to Ravello and parked the car for three days.

It would be cheaper to not rent a car, however we started in Savona and drove down through Sicily and back to Rome. If we were landing in Naples, we wouldn't drive. Some of the bigger Sorrento hotels will even send a car to pick you up in Naples.

You can get lost in the maze of streets in Pompei. It's best to try to drive those narrow, double-parked streets in the daytime. Pick up a good detailed road map from the diffrent regions in Italy. They are easy to use, and you can buy them in the U.S. before you leave at Barnes & Noble, Borders, or a good local bookstore. Ciao!

while i don't have directions for you, I did do the drive from Rome airport to the ruins at pompeii and then on down to Positano. It is a simple drive with plenty of signs for the amalfi coast from Pompeii. The drive from Naples to the ruins can not be far and my guess is you can get decent enough directions from your car rental place. You can also check on the website for your hotel in Positano, they sometimes will have directions to the town for people coming from the north.
