Como - Otisei - Venice

My family of 5 will be spending 11 days in this region and we are thinking of

4 nights in Como, 3 nights in Ortisei and 4 nights in Venice.

What would be the best route for doing this via trains. We are flying into this region via Majorca and would like to stick with train travel rather then car/plane.

Should we start with Como - Otisei - Venice or the other way around? We need to take an early flight on the last day to Frankfurt so ideally would end in Venice or close to Milan.

Thank you for any suggestions!!

Take the train to Bolzano and Ortisei is easily reached by SAD bus.

You might also consider a base in Varenna, a scenic Lake Como town with a train station – 1 hour to Milan Centrale.

Ortisei is not a remote location. Actually, Ortisei is an excellent place to base to visit the Dolomites. What month are you looking at being there?

EXACT dates are highly important when it comes to local transport solutions.

The overall journey to Ortisei is "not easily reached" from Como and although Ortisei is not "physically" remote connections via public transport in this region can be less than optimal.

From Como itself just to Bolzano is a minimum of 3 trains, at best 4h13 with most connections over 5hrs.

From Bolzano the best onward journey depends on EXACTLY when you arrive. There are 2 buses from Bolzano - either the 170 or 350 however neither of them run frequently from Bolzano and because of the timetables it is sometimes better to go on the train from Bolzano to Ponte Gardena and pick up the 350 from there..

If you were to leave Como San Giovanni at 11:17

Arrive Bolzano 15:30 (the fastest journey) - you are unlikely to make the 15:32 bus so the next solution is to take the train to Ponte Gardena at 16:00 where you can pick up the 350 bus arriving Ortisei 16:55

but if you preplan it the Verona - Bolzano local train also carries on to Ponte Gardena (meaning you can mitigate that extra short service Bolzano-Ponte Gardena)

Wait another 10mins in Bolzano and at 16:10 pick uo the direct 170 bus that arrives Ortisei at 17:23

So overall about 6hrs travelling -and that is your best

www.fsitaliane.it for Italian rail

The best rail connection is to use the German www.bahn.de Munich to Venice Intercity service.

This service stops at Bressanone and Bolzano

Departs Bressanone at 14:56

Departs Bolzano at 15:31

Arrives Venice 18:10

You can get a direct 350 bus or 170 bus at ~ 13:30 which will get you in Bolzano with plenty of time

350 13:31 - 14:28

170 13:35 - 14:48

You can book these tickets in advance on www.bahn.de (up to 92days)

e.g. currently for fares for July Bressanone - Venice €19 single

IMPORTANT: The italians www.fsitaliane.it Trenitalia do NOT co-operate with the Germans on rail info/services etc. The Italians have been in dispute with the Germans over these cross border services "childishly" refusing even to acknowledge their existence on their own website timetables. The Germans run 5 direct services dailly Munich to Verona and one on to Venice.

Therefore only use www.bahn.de for these tickets

If you wish to get under way earlier there are numerous services between Verona and Venice - both fast FB Intercty but also the slightly slower but much much cheaper Regionals.

www.sii.bz.it (which does the bus services - same as SAD but available in English) will also do transport solutions from Ortisei to Verona - showing train connections AND will show if there is a train connection connecting in with one of the German Munich-Verona trains (they have a symbol list on the right hand side. The red trains being the ÖBB/DB Trains - ÖBB is Austrian national rail www.oebb.at and the Germans/Austrians co-operate on rail services etc)

Just then need to look at www.fsitaliane.it for the connections from Verona to Venice.

Another alternative for an early start and the Faster than doing the various train combos in the morning is to take a Taxi from Ortisei to Colfosco and pick up the Cortina Express service to Venice.

In the main summer months (only on Saturdays and Sundays) there is a coach service from Colfosco at 9am

Arrives Venice at 12:50

If you get the train to Ponte Gardena (Waidbruck in German) then busses go every 30 minutes on a Saturday
