Roma to Chiusi TRN Aures or Intercity Plus

Buon Giorno!

We are two couples traveling from Rome to Montepulciano for a holiday in September 2011. We are planning to fly into Rome on Friday and take a train from Roma Termini to Chiusi on Saturday and then rent a car in Chiusi for travel to Montepulciano. I found on Raileurope.com that there are trains TRN Autres or Intercity Plus from Rome to Chiusi. Is there a difference? If so which is preferred? I looked on Trenitalia - but they only showed one train from Rome to Chiusi - which only departs at 19:05?

What time should we plan to arrive in Chiusi to pick up our rental car when they are open?

Grazie a mille!

The train schedules for September won't be on-line until early June. Nevertheless, take a look at the current schedules to get an idea of service. From Rome FCO Airport to Chiusi, here is the best solution:

1. FCO airport to Roma Tiburtina (not Termini) station via FR1 airport train (NOT the train going to Termini station);

2. Roma Tiburtina to Chiusi via unreserved "regionale" train (rather than the more expensive Intercity train, which is not much faster).

Do not trust information on RailEurope. Its train information is often incomplete and sometimes inaccurate. If it is showing information on Italian trains after 12 June, it is inventing the information, as the schedules are not yet decided.

Use the train operator's site at www.trenitalia.it/homepage_en.html

Use a date in the next 7 days to get current times and costs, and check September information after the schedules become available in mid to late May.

We will wait and check train schedules later in May-June. Appreciate your advice. Grazie a tutti!

I am most certainly not an expert on Italian trains but I go down to Roma Termini from Chiusi often enough to know that the times barely change that much irrespective of the time of year. There are possibly fewer on a Saturday morning going down as there won't be the business commuters - and a surprising number of people do commute from Chiusi and especially Orvieto - but there are still plenty of trains. I checked the timetable for next Saturday (23rd April) and can see that out of Termini there are trains as follows:-

12.36 - 14.06 (IC) Euros 17 in 2nd class

12.48 - 14.36 (regional) Euros 9.10 in 2nd class

14.43 - 16.35 (regional) Euros 9.10 in 2nd class

15.45 - 17.15 (IC) Euros 17 in 2nd class

16.30 - 18.05 (IC) Euros 17 in 2nd class

so they're pretty frequent.

The train from FCO most certainly used to go to Termini though it came in on platform 34 and required a very long walk over to 5 or 6 for the Florence / Chiusi train. Has that changed recently?

Again many thanks for the information. Now, we are to rent a car in Chiusi which means that we must arrive before noon on a Saturday to pick it up at the car rental correct? So we must find a Rome to Chiusi train Saturday morning.

If you take the regionale train to Chiusi Scalo, you should connect at Roma Tiburtina rather than at Roma Termini. The connection at Tiburtina is much faster and easier than at Termini, and the fare is even slightly lower.

Thanks GAC - we will not be traveling to Chiusi from the airport. We arrive in Rome Friday morning and plan to spend the day in the city and spend the night - in a hotel close by to Roma Termini.

But I will share your advice with other friends who may take the train from the airport to Chiusi :)
