You would take hydrofoils or ferries – The hydrofoils are faster, but more expensive. There’s no need to book in advance.

Or you could also take excursions.

I'll be in Sicily the first half of May and I'd like to spend a couple of days in The Aeolian Islands. I was hoping I could take my car to Lipari, get a room and then use it as a springboard to the rest of Lipari, Vulcano, Stromboli, etc. I have found the ferry sites, such as Usticaline, but I can't tell from the schedules and prices if any of the trips include autos. I hate to leave my car on the mainland in Milazzo.

Welcome to Sicily Thib0deaux!

Ustica Lines only runs hydrofoil service.

Siremar runs the car ferry service to the Aeolians.

Mille grazie, Vagabonda. I have found the English Siremar site but I do not understand how it operates. When I click on the 9:00 trip, a drop down window opens with icons that I don't understand. For class, it only offers "Ponte." Can I stay in my car? When I click on the car icon I get what looks like sizes of cars: fino a 3.5, 4.0, etc. When I have guessed at each item and click Continue, I get a message 'Not all Vehicles are selected. Please enter information for all the vehicles on board.' I hope I am not exhausting you!

Prego Thib0deaux,

The Siremar site has never been user-friendly, and Italian sites are always the most current and updated sites.

Rates depend on the size of the car.

Perhaps check schedules and purchase tickets on arrival - siremar.it/linee-e-orari/mappa-dei-collegame…

You might also purchase tickets from an agency – Scroll to Porto di Milazzo.

Become familiar with conditions of transport – Time to arrive prior....

And for planning purposes, you might try an online booking site that’s more user-friendly

Obviously it will make a difference if you had a car, a caravan or a wheelchair . We just got back and as basic foot passengers were astounded by the number of ferry operators servicing the islands with all their needs. 3 basic firms offer Hydrofoils and then there are cargo boats and car ferries between the mainland and Sicily , principally Milazzo, which itself has a train service and bus to the ferry port.

Yes, it's ideal to book in advance, but we never saw any capacity problems with the main islands - Alicudi and Filcudi are less well served , but there is less to see there, so no surprises.

Once on the islands you have a blizzard of people offering day trips to any combination of the islands, or beaches, as well as boat hire and dive trips.
