Cruise port in Civitavecchia, what to do there?

We have been to Rome recently and dont want to do another expensive ships tour! Is there anything to do around the cruise terminal here, or shall we save our euro and chill on an empty ship?

Can we walk anywhere from the ship into town, or is it one of those huge ports which need transport just to leave it?

Thanks in advance!

I believe that there is a free shuttle service from your ship to the dock gates, which are right at the town. However, all the guide books suggest that there is not much to see in Civitavecchia.

yes the shuttle is free and Civitavecchia has a free museum right outside the port gate, a very nice promenade at walking distance. Also at 10 min. drive there is a beautiful Archeological excavation of roman baths "Terme Taurine". There is a waterpark (the largest in the region). Also at 20 minutes drive (by inexpensive public transportation) you can reach Tarquinia (world heritage Etruscan site)....

One of the problems that the area near Rome suffers is that it is near Rome, and nothing compares to it.

For example Ostia Antica (often referred to as "the better Pompeii" and in my opinion it is better), receives none of the deserved attention only because it is near Rome.

Are there taxis at the port that would go to Terme Taurine? Cost? Also, bus access?

Taxis at the port unfortunately refuse short services. Last year there was a big fuss as a person was refused service to the hospital. I hate to say that but it happens. There is a very inexpensive shuttle service that include entrance fee.

A small correction. What I was talking about are private driver services (not municipal taxis). At the port you can only find private driver services, you will not find any taxi there. To find a municipal taxi you would have to go to the train statio, Those cannot refuse service, but they are very hard to find specially in the first half of the morning or later in the afternoon

Does the shuttle service go between the cruise port and Terme Taurine? Would this be the only way to go or is there bus service. If the shuttle service makes several trips back and forth, I'm sure that would work perfectly. Thanks for your help, SmartCruise...

The city bus system does not go to the terme taurine. The shuttle bus goes on an as needed base, as it gets reserved. The other way would be by taxy, but it is almost ipossible to get a taxi to go for short trips, and it would cost more than the shutte service which is included with the entrance.

Just got back from a cruise which stopped in Civitavecchia, you could try Tarquinia a small village about 30 minute bus ride. Bus stop about 2 nd turning on left outside of port opposite a church, we bought tickets on the bus cost 4 euro return.

We just returned from a cruise last week where we had a day in Civitavecchia- not wanting to go to Rome for a mere 4 hours we stayed in the port and were very surprised by how nice the place was. We found a great street for shopping with bars and cafes to sit and watch the world go by. The promenade was wide and bordered the sea which made it a pleasant place to spend a few hours. All previous reviews on Civitavecchia have given the place a poor review but I would urge anyone not wanting to trek to Rome to explore this pretty little town.
