We are staying in Cefalu from Christmas Eve to New Year's Eve. Does anyone know when the shops and restaurants are shut/open over this period? And also whether there is midnight

Mass at the cathedral (and how early we should arrive for it if so)?

Most restuarants and shops will shut Xmas Eve and New Years Eve - thats family time - but you will find things open on Christmas Day and for al lthe period between Xmas and the New Year. There is usually a concert on Xmas Day. New Years Eve sees everything close in the late afternoon to midnight and then it all reopens - all night. New Years Day is closed. For midnight mass you can be late! Its not like a English church where everyone is in position 20 mins before. Sicilian church is more a social occasion, you can wander in and out, have a chat, make phone calls- .....

Generally expect shops to close in Cefalù on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, as well as New Year's Day, but shops would be open on New Year's Eve, and some restaurants would be open during this entire period, but restaurants would be open at specific times, and would serve special holiday meals.

Mass will be celebrated at midnight on Christmas Eve.
