Oh course it is possible, but it's not quick. You take a French train from Nice to Ventimiglia, then an Italian train. The whole journey takes 4.5 to 5.5 hours. You have to change trains in Italy, at one of Genoa, Savona or Tortona.

http://www.trenitalia.com/homepage_en.html will give you times from Nice to Alessandria, but not fares. For fares, look at Ventimiglia to Alessandria, looking at a date this week to see all, as some are NA online more than seven days in advance. Then add €6.90 for the French ticket from Nice to Ventimiglia.

In theory you can buy the whole journey at the booking office in Nice. But it might be easier to buy separately at Nice and Ventimiglia using ticket machines to avoid queues.

Thank you perilizia ! The fares are of no matter to us. More important are the times and train connections.

I didn't think of entering NICE on the Trenitalia website, thinking only italian train stations would be accepted !

If we buy tickets separately at Nice & Vent., of concern to me is that we only have 15 minutes between trains at Ventimiglia to do so.

It might be easier to buy the ticket/s for the entire trip at Nice, don't you think ?

Don't aim for a 15-minute transfer at Ventimiglia. It is not at all unknown for these local French trains to run several minutes late. Take the next earlier train from Nice to Ventimiglia.

That's what I was afraid of sydneynick !

We have the choice of arriving at Vent. at 9.15 or 10.15, for departure to Aless. at 11am.

45 minutes between trains should be sufficient, shouldn't it SN?

The French trains are seldom grossly late, so 45 minutes should be fine. Better that you spend 30 minutes having a coffee in Ventimiglia rather than missing an infrequent train.

Thanks for the confirmation SN !

One other thing : would you buy a ticket in Nice for the entire trip or split them ie buy at Nice for the french leg, then buy at Vent. for the remainder of the journey ? TIA

I think you can buy tickets all the way in Nice, and this would mean you don't have to bother about them in Ventimiglia.

Note that tickets on local trains (TER in France, Regionale in Italy) can be used on any local train for the journey purchased. Before you get on a train, you must time-stamp the ticket in a machine at the station.
