Gite in small town or village

Hi, We are looking to spend a lazy week in a small town or largish village somewhere around the Bernay/Evreux area in early October. We will be arriving in Paris by train.

We would like to stay in a gite. There will only be two of us. We are planning on just resting and taking in local sights, wanting to just recharge our batteries. I expect we will have to hire a car.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a place that has a little soul and perhaps a market/food shops/cafes?

Thanks for your help!

One way to find accommodation in France is to look at local tourist office websites.

Here is some websites for the Eure département:

http://www.eure-tourisme.fr/ (in French only)

www.cape-tourisme.fr/english/index.html

I only gave a you two of the many tourist websites you can search for the Eure region and nearby. Every region, department, city and town has their own tourist office website (though some are only in French) so you can google them. Here are the ones for Evreux and Bernay:

http://www.grandevreuxtourisme.fr/?lang=en

http://www.bernaytourisme.fr/

The tourist office websites will tell you everything you need to know about what to see and do, museums, monuments, sites, attractions, towns, visits, local food, markets, restaurants, accommodation etc.

There are many websites where you can search for self-catering accommodation in France. The three that I always use are:

www.abritel.fr

www.homelidays.com

www.gites-de-france.com

Here are links to several more:

www.holiday-rentals.co.uk

www.frenchconnections.co.uk

www.papvacances.com

I'll add French Country Cottages to the list of possible sources. Their cottages are inspected and selected for inclusion, and not just listed.

french-country-cottages.co.uk/cottages/le-co…

I've also used www.holidaylettings.co.uk for several gite bookings in France. They are purely a listings company though. Their properties are also listed on TA which you could of course also try, but I find the Holidaylettings website easier to use.

Although there are only two of you, if you can afford it I suggest you go for a 2 bedroom cottage, because often the living space in a 1-bedroom place or studio is pitifully small - ok for one night or two but can be a bit constraining for a whole week - however much you like each other :)

Best of luck!

Bernay itself is very nice as is Orbec.

Thank you for your help everyone, especially FM for that exhaustive list of sites.

Happily I read French reasonably well, (mais je parler le Francais comme une vache Espangole) so I shall do a bit more research.

The fact that you know that saying in itself says that you speak better French than you lead us to believe ;)

Thanks for your help everyone,

We have found a gite between Broglie and Orbec that suits us perfectly. I will post a trip report when I return!
