Getting around Stirling

We will be staying in Edinburgh and travelling to Stirling by train in July. We plan to go to the castle, Wallace monument and to the Highland games over the course of a couple of days. What are our travel options once in the city? Are there shuttle busses or city busses that stop at the Castle? Can you walk to to the monument from the castle?

Looking for any tips..we are hoping not to torture the Stirling residents with Americans driving on the wrong side of the road!

Thanks in advance!

Stirling (I am from there) is actually pretty small. It's kind of a local joke that they renamed it a city.

From the station to the castle is a 20 minute walk but it is quite a steep incline. You could always take a taxi for about £5.

No there is no shuttle bus and they stopped the HOHO busses a few years ago.

You can walk to the Wallace monument but it will take around 45 minutes although the first part is downhill. Click here for walking directions

Once you get to Union Street you can pick up any bus going to the University (which has a nice campus you can walk around.

Again a taxi would not be that much.

I think there is a Castle shuttle bus now, but it may not be very frequent. A taxi will be only a few £.

From Murray Place the buses no. 62 (Alloa via Tillicoultry) run past the Monument every 20 minutes during the day or as RonaldoC says buses to the University will get you fairly close. There is a courtesy minibus from the Monument reception/cafe up to the Monument itself.

If you are getting the train to Stirling each day then if you get a ticket to STIRLING PLUSBUS it will cost about £3 extra and give you all-day use of local buses.

Hi,

Yes there is the Castle View Park and Ride bus which starts and ends from Castle View Business Park in Stirling, there is a very regular service of a bus every 10 minutes, the route goes right through the city centre (you could get on at King Street opp Golden Lion Hotel) and the bus will take you up to the Old Town Jail (5 minutes away from the Castle entrance) otherwise it is very steep climb. You could then pick up the bus again in Broad Street which will take you back down the hill.

If you are in Stirling on a week day go into the Customer First Office (next to thistle shopping centre) where a Visit Scotland staff member can assist you with your travel and give you a city centre map.

Hello

Hope that the Highland Games won't be critical to your trip, as I'm afraid that they have been cancelled for this year.

Thank you. We found out early enough that we are heading to Loch Lomond instead. Thank you though!
