Hello,

Douglas is the capital of the Island and there are good transport links to everywhere, apart from regular buses, there is the Victorian Steam Railway running from Douglas to the towns of Castletown with its excellent Castle and the original House of Keys, both well worth a visit and the towns of Port St Mary and Port Erin, both sea side resorts although Port St Mary is a fair work from the station. There is also the Manx Electric Railway running from Douglas to Laxey and Ramsey and also to the summit of Snaefell.

If you like beer, then the Bay View Hotel and Falcons Nest in Port Erin both serve good ale and good food, the Glue Pot in Castletown is interesting and the Viking and the Sidings near the railway station are both excellent too. In Peel, there is the Creek Inn on the harbour with an excellent selection of fresh caught seafood and the House of Mannanan is nearby, one of those heritage experience type of places. Douglas has a very good museum and there is the Casino and cinemas on the Promenade and numerous pubs. Expect to pay around the £3.20 mark for a pint of Guinness but less for the excellent local brewed Okells bitter, licensing laws are liberal and closing times vary from pub to pub, but late night drinking can be found at the Hilton. Check out whats on at the Villa Marina they have shows and comedy nights.

Hope this is of use.

And don't forget the horse trams along the promenade. Buy an an all day ticket:

As well as Okells, look out for Bushy's beers also brewed on the island.

If you visit Laxey go and find the Shore Inn which has a microbrewery behind the pub brewing Bosun Bitter.

This is one of the few places on the island you will have chance to sample this. There is also Lady Isabella wheel here too

and the terminus for Snaefell Mountain Railway.

If you are intending to do Snaefell Mountain Railway, Manx Electric Railway &/or the steam railway it may be cheaper to buy an explorer ticket rather than individual tickets.

I support the earlier two replies, especially about using the Explorer tickets for public transport - pick up a timetable as they're all reliable for timing (but railway times have changed from the collective bus/train May 2009 timetable so get one of those AND the new 2010 Railway timetable). Both available at the Welcome Centre at the Sea Terminal in Douglas.

No licensing hours as such on the Island.. Landlords have discretion to set their own "usual hours" and to vary those, but generally to midnight or 1 am at weekends.

Check out what's on at the Gaiety Theatre and at the Villa Marina (a concert/conference venue on Douglas prom). Tickets from the Welcome Centre again. The Manx Museum in Douglas is free but closed Sundays. Most other Heritage sites elsewhere on the Island are open 7 days but charge. A "5-site" ticket is good value if you're into heritage - National Trust or English Heritage members have reciprocal membership so bring your card.

Enjoy!
