Callander to Mull, is it doable?

Hi we are staying near Callander in July. I would really like to drive to Oban and take the ferry to Mull for the day.

Is this possible or too ambitious for one day?

Can you just turn up at Oban and get on a ferry or does it have to be booked in advance?

Cheers, Elaine

Hi Elaine,

You need to check the timetables at www.calmac.co.uk,

and work out how long it will take you to drive. At a guess I'd say 2 hours.

www.viamichelin.com for route planning and timings.

So, yes, it seems feasible.

As for booking, that depends if you are taking the car? There's supposed to be a good bus tour of the island, but, again, it depends on what you want.

A busy day, but doable. Allow two hours from Callander to Oban, and you have to be on the pier half an hour prior to the ferry departing.

If you are taking the car across, booking is essential in July, but is simply a matter of phoning and booking - no money has to change hands. You then buy the tickets when you turn up (during the half hour check in time).

No booking is required for foot passengers. If you don't take the car, check www.bowmanstours.co.uk for both tour options, and for the local service buses.

When are you going in July? You may be lucky and time your day trip to coincide with either the West Highland Yacht Week, or the Mull Highland Games.

Many thanks for your quick replies, we will be in Callander 12-19 July.

Was going to take the car on to the ferry because I thought we'd need it in Mull?

Yes, it's do-able, but check the CalMac timetable: www.calmac.co.uk

Taking the car on the ferry is quite expensive. It may be better to leave the car in Oban and travel as a foot passenger. On arrival at Craignure in Mull, there is a little steam railway which will take you to Torosay Castle. This is ideal for day trippers. See http://www.mullrail.co.uk/

12-19 July you will miss both the Yacht week and the Highland Games, I'm afraid!

Whether you take the car over depends very much on what you want to do when you are there. You have three choices if you don't take the car:

- stay in the immediate area of Craignure, and visit Torosay castle via the miniature railway. Duart castle is a bit further. There is not much else in Craignure, which is little more than a ferry terminal, a shop, and a pub or two.

- go on one of the Bowman's bus tours mentioned in my previous posting. Might be a bit dull for a 15 year old, though.

- use the local service bus, and either head north to Tobermory, or south to Fionnphort (for Iona). Note that service buses do not meet all ferries - check the timetable carefully before travelling (Bowman's link again).

You'd obviously have a lot more freedom if you take the car across, but it is quite expensive. And given the time you will have, you will still have to make the north/south choice when you leave the ferry. If you are taking the car, choose carefully which day you go, to avoid the seemingly random "full fare only" sailings, which would make the return crossing (for the car only!) £81 rather than the saver return fare of £55.50. See: calmac.co.uk/Timetables-Fares/…

There is one further option to consider, which would be quite a bit more driving, but not much more journey time - go Lochaline/Fishnish one way, and Oban/Craignure the other. The gives you the benefit of a drive through Glencoe, and reduces the price of taking the car to £40.50 (see Island Hopscotch 6).

A bit off topic

Mitches if your in Callander then you must come to Balloch. The Highland Games are Sat 17th July. Callander to Balloch is only 30 mins drive max.

It's a fab day the atmosphere is brill
