Looking for a place to stay hotel/inn/b&b with 2 adults and 2 teens. 10th and 11th of August. Would appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks very much!

I've enjoyed great breaks at the Hilton Craigendarroch. Has a lovely pool/sauna complex that your kids will enjoy, and the breakfast buffet was great. It's about 1/2 up the hill from Ballater village itself.

Abs :)

Got to agree with Abs, if you have two teenagers then Hilton is your best bet. you can get a room with a balcony with some great views.

Just come back from this place: tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g190738-d208107… A bit of an old person's place, truth be known, but decent and likely to be about half the price of the Hilton. You pays your money...

If you do choose Craigendarroch, which is a beautiful location, be sure to book one of the 'spare' timeshare lodges rather than rooms in the hotel.

The lodges (various sizes) are ideal for families with teens; plenty of space, well equipped kitchen for breakfasts and scratch meals, even your own sauna

With service payments coming in from the timeshare owners they're immeculately maintained, unlike the hotel itself which is old, tired, badly in need of renovation and even if it was tidied up a bit much more suited for couples and oldies.

Agree the leisure facilities are OK - nice pool, basic spa - although the outdoor 'big kids' play areas, gardens and ski slope have been shamefully neglected in recent years. It's a real shame Hilton have let the gem that is the Craigendarroch hotel decline to the state it's in now.

We'll be going for our annual week on site as the guest of a lodge owner soon and will report back on how the long-promised improvements are progressing (or not). Don't hold your breath.

If you are looking for something centrally located in the town with all the facilities, but none of the cost, you should look at the Habitat@Ballater Hostel. http://www.habitat-at-ballater.com/

We stayed here and were very impressed at how the owners appear to have thought of everything that you might need. They have family rooms with a King size double bed plus a bunk bed (for the girls). The rooms are en-suite and, very sensibly, the shower room is separate from the toilet so there are no anxious queues to use the facilities.

Other niceties are Wi-Fi, Massive flat screen TVs in the rooms, a well equipped kitchen if you decide to self cater and there is even a wood burning stove in the lounge, but yopu won't need it!

The hostel is very conveniently located next to an Italian restaurant (La Mangiatoia) which is owned by the same people.

Highly recommended by us,

Thanks all!!! We ended up booking at a B & B - The Schoolhouse. Looks fabulous, so I hope it will be. I'll let you know!

Schoolhouse is very good too! Allan and Cathy are a lovely couple and they will make you feel very much at home. Cathy is quite a character and used to (maybe still does) do very entertaining bedtime stories for children (and big children). She's even been known to get dressed up to tell the stories in character.

I wouldn't call the Schoolhouse an Inn. It's really a bit of a cross between a B&B and a Hostel, but I don't mean that in a bad way. It's a really good place for families and is a quiet (not that there are any busy ones) corner of Ballater with easy access to the golf course for evening walks by the River Dee.
