Deganwy Castle

Hello. Does anyone know of a good town map that would include Deganwy Castle AND show car parks in the area?

Thank you!

Hello; I need to elaborate on my original question, but there's no edit option. (a) Does anyone know of a good town map that would include Deganwy Castle AND show car parks in the area? And (b) on Google Earth the castle area appears to be surrounded by private homes and properties. How does one gain access to the castle grounds??

Thank you!

Hi Carobs

Not quite sure if you mean Deganwy castle or Conwy Castle??

Deganwy Castle is a hotel situated in the small village of Deganwy, which incidetally has just ceased trading!!!

Conwy Castle is the nearby castle situated in the town of Conwy with a car park near by. Dont know about a map but Google Earth would show you if it is indeed Conwy your thinking of??

Hope this helps

THere is indeed a true castle on the hill behind Deganwy - a Welsh princes castle rather than an English occupyer's one - and therefore left to absolute ruin. The access is a narrow footpath between two houses, marked with a small signpost. But there is no signposting from the main road - you have to wander around the housing estate.

Thank you Henlaw,

it is indeed the ruins in Deganwy we wish to see. Would you happen to know the approximate area of the footpath, or the names of the roads around the housing estate?

Go to

www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/

Click on the pink circle "I want to get a map now" and type Deganwy in the search box. This will give you a large scale map (1.25 inches to the mile) of the are showing where the castle is (much better than Google maps.) There seem to be a variety of footpaths (red dotted lines) leading to the castle.

If you want detailed instructions, try emailing Tourist Information in Conwy as they may be able to help. Also ask them about the best place to park. There is no car park marked so you will probably need to park in one of the streets.

Email: conwytic@conwy.gov.uk

Have you seen this website which has lots of pictures of the castle:

Philip's Red Books map of Llandudno and Colwyn Bay is useful if you are staying in the area.

The castle is also known as Maelgwn’s Castle and is one of 10 sites of national importance, that have been identified by the Welsh Assembly Government as being in need of conservation works.

The castle played a key role in Welsh medieval history, before being destroyed in the late 13th century

Work is currently underway to carry out masonry conservation and improve access and information for visitors.

Work is scheduled for completion by March 2011
