Has anyone stayed at Villa Steel Magnolia recently? I would appreciate any information and your feedback about this vacation rental. Thanks!
As the first person to post to indicate some problems only to have them minimized by the owner, .ie, we did advise of the cockroach problem, we were not shown the alarm and the things stolen were of more than mere consequence, I decided to let it go rather than cause further issue with the owner's response. However, given we rent vacation homes around the world and have for years, I know what is reasonable to expect.... It is sad another renter had to experience problems too. Thankfully we only saw a mouse the first night and no rats and the pool was okay.....
First, I am very sorry that you didn't have a good experience at Villa Steel Magnolias. Let me assure you that my review was based solely on the experience we had at the villa. I don't know the owner, and I'm not friends with him. However, he and members of his staff, were always very responsive to my questions and provided assistance when needed. Thank goodness we didn't have any issues with rats, because we spent every evening outside grilling and eating. The pool and the water pressure weren't issues while we were there. During our week at the villa, it appeared clean and well-maintained. I know that everyone's experiences may not be the same, but we had a great time and would definitely go back to Villa Steel Magnolias.
Well I am very surprised to read such a poor review of this property. My husband, myself and our daughter stayed here with another couple and their two girls from March 29 to April 9, 2013. We were met at the airport and taken to the villa. It was very lovely, clean and has everything you need to make it like home. We cooked on the deck and in the kitchen and did not get chased by rats. May have seen one after dark one night while we were inside but we were more likely to see one of the resident chickens than any other critters. But then we did not leave food around in foil packs either...if we did that where we live we would be dealing with alot bigger problem than rats...lol...bears!!!
The staff was attentive and courteous. The pool did have the hose in it in the mornings but we assumed it was evaporation. In no way did it ever hinder our showering experience.
We did not spend our days at the villa, we mostly had our breakfast and set out to the beach. Baie rouge is an awesome beach just down the lane. Two beach bars with good food. If you ask the bar restaurant guys they will cook a private meal for you after hours.
All in all it is a lovely villa where we would have no hesitation to return!
Ps. As far as I know we are not related to the owner...
Folks we didn't "leave food around in foil packages" we were eating on the veranda and had just turned the grill off when the first rat was seen IN the grill. The next night he came back with friends - about 7 of them. And no, it wasn't (as the owner has now suggested to me in subsequent responses) "the same rat eight times". He's also admitted in his email that someone who stayed there ahead of us threw fish cleaning remains over the side of the veranda, which is what probably drew them to us. The fact that he knew this and didn't call an exterminator THEN is concerning. The bigger issue that needs to be emphasized here is that if you stay here and you have a problem, forget about getting a response from the owner. He's so busy patting himself on the back for having what he considers to be a perfect rental, that YOU will be come the problem, not the problem itself. We too have traveled all over the world and have never been exposed to anything like this or gotten a reaction like this.
For those of you who had a great trip - congratulations. The purpose of writing this is to share experiences and maybe save the next person from a bad experience.
I am so sorry to hear that you did not have the relaxing experience that we had while at the villa. I am a friend of YukonGirl who was at the villa with her. Our exprience was fantastic. I realise that at times things can go awry however, I would highly encourage people to go to this property. We were very pleased with our stay and had no issues whatsoever. I would recommend this property to anyone. The staff were great and we had great hospitality. Or families actually plan on returning. From the moment we got off the plane until the moment we left, we were taken care of. In addition, if you stay at this property, you have personal access to the best beach on the island. If you are considering St. Martin,be sure to contact us for some great information. Acutally.....maybe you should avoid this property so that we can keep itnfor ourselves!
Hello future and former Villa Steel Magnolias guests. In regards to my prior guests reviews you will notice many great reviews and wonderful comments about my Villa and one not so positive recent review that I would like to reply to. Most importantly - all of these issues have been fixed or in the process of being fixed. Not to minimize her issues but her are the facts.... not excuses.
I have been renting this Villa for about 13 years and in that time I have at over 250 groups of guests stay in the Villa. Until this posting from this recent guest all of my VRBO and most of my other online reviews like Trip Advisors have been very complementary of the Villa, my staff and myself and have in fact is just the opposite of most everything this guests claims. For a long time it has been one of the very most in demand Villa's on St Maarten/St Martin and for a good reason. We all know you can't please all of the people all of the time...but we do try very hard everyday to do so. Their is no way I can keep people from posting bad things, yet they are very, very few. Maybe 3 negative things in 13 years is the best she could come up with and even one of those more negative issues the guest did say I was quick to come to the Villa and respond. That about one negative comment every 1,581 days! .
The lack of concern or dealing promptly with anything this or ANY guest needs is just not true. I am blessed to have a multi million dollar Villa here, I'm on the Island at the time and just 15 minutes away and aware of a problem like the guest is talking about and my staff of 3 or myself ignore it and do nothing about it. Does that sound right? I don't think so, not in a million years. Fact. I got ONE non urgent voicemail call 4 or 5 days into their 7 night visit from her very pleasant husband which was more FYI than urgent while I was traveling back to the USA and on the airplane that I heard late at night. I called the Villa twice the next day and got the Villa's voicemail (Yes we have a great phone system with free USA lines too) and left a message both times with no reply. I called my houseman that night and he said they were ok. I got no email and heard nothing else. My on Island Villa Administrator got no call. Knowing the guest would not be home until Sunday, I followed up with a "I'm sorry" email about the problem she had Sunday morning. I got back a email lecture a poor kid might get blasting me, my Villa and my staff over 10 years that normally gets mostly rave reviews. She almost was bragging that "my review will likely not assist you in renting the property in the future". That seems to be her main goal and FYI...take a look, she also BLASTED the rent a car company she used online too!
On the problem. Yes, indeed the tropics and St Martin has been known to have some rats and yes I would say this guests did see a rat or even two but no way 8 of them! Keep in mind its a large property of about 2 acres. Most of my guests do very much enjoy sitting on the outside patio by the pool overlooking a incredible view of the Island and Caribbean and some even enjoy a glass of wine while doing so. Its a great place do spend the evening just relaxing. Well, a rat runs across and you got one, then runs back and you got two and so on and so on. Get the picture? I hate them as much as anybody but its never been and is not now a serious problem and we are alert to any future problem and dealing with it. Next the issue about the pool. It is true that the pool does leak about 3 to 5 inches a day of water which started a few months ago. The problem is that the Villa has been almost fully booked everyday since it started and we would need to drain it to fix it, so we have not had the opportunity to do so yet but will soon fixed it. Unfortunately the only thing we can do is keep filling it up and it make no reason not have to on a daily basis as other guests will be coming soon also so it does not save me anything by not doing so. We absolutely did NOT drain the cistern dry to fill up the pool and run the house without water. I'm sorry, that's just just a bit silly and frankly another misconception what was really going on. Fact is, but this guests refuses to believe is that the French side of the island was having city water problems that week. It was even in the local paper about the water problems, but their on the beach where they should be and not reading local papers. Its more common on the Dutch side of the island for ,light and water do go off at times for a short period, but very rare on the French side. My houseman knows now that he made a mistake not to put the Villa on the cistern water as he normally does, but any water outage would have been fairly brief.
Unfortunately this review may run away a few possible guests to another Villa maybe that's not as nice and in as good of area just a few step from the beach or not as good of value, more expensive and that's not as well equipped and with bigger problems that go do unfixed. But that will just open up a week that is normally booked to the folks that will consider the many more great things my Villa offers that's others Villa's don't offer, read all the great, good and even wonderful reviews, even call around and ask others if needed and then decide from that. I am sorry this guest had this problem and I have already expressed that to her many times. I email her back the facts and info... and not excuses. Obviously she was a bit annoyed by her "congratulations" remark on the nice replies to her comments that a few of my former Villa guests made online saying what a great time they just had and they like most others would be returning. And how down right awful to suggest these great comments were made my myself, family or friends. Again a bit silly and misconceived. Sorry...they are very true and genuine comments and thoughts. Not saying we are 100% perfect but to me, much of this was just a result of bad or miss communications. Vacations are to few and far between and I take my guests vacation to be more important than my own. I do thank her for the nice things she had to say about the Villa and hope she understands we are on a little Island in the middle of the big ocean and we do the best possible at all times, but it really is paradise. Please feel free ask me ANY questions about this or speak to my many happy and repeat guests. Its our promise that we will make your visit to Villa Steel Magnolias the very best! Thanks.
