5 days in Ålesund - what to do?

Hi!

We just arrived in Ålesund, staying at the beautiful Brygge Hotel. Unfortunately, we just discovered the TripAdvisor Alesund forum, othervise we would have asked sooner but what is the recommended thing to see/experience during our stay here?

What we have considered so far

1. Experience the Geiranger fjord by boat (are 62 Nord the best company to hire?)

2. Visit the aquarium

Another thing might be to try to experience "Trollstigen" but we are not sure how. Rental car? Bus? Any other way?

Unfortunately, due to an injured shoulder, we are not able to hire a kajak or hike for longer periods of time.

Any suggestions for us would be highly appreciated :-)

Cheers, Jacob

You can rent a car and drive Åndalsnes-Trollstigen-Geiranger-ferry to Hellesylt-Ålesund. Full day.

Hurtigruten to Geiranger is also an option.

On weekdays it would also be possible to get to Geiranger by early morning bus and connect with the bus through Trollstigen to Åndalsnes. Afternoon bus back from Åndalsnes to Ålesund.

I suggest you visit the tourist office for ideas. There are many options for excursions from Ålesund. The open air museum would be interesting as well. A visit to Runde and other islands.

Hurtigruten will take you through the Geirangerfjord and you can return to Ålesund by bus.

You may find that 5 days is not enough :)

Enjoy your stay.

Sukkertoppen near the town and the island of Godoya and lighthouse at Alnes accessible by local bus are great places for a short hike.

If you hire a car you should do a tour of the Sunnmore Alps to the south of Alesund including the car ferries on the Hjorundfjord and return via Norangsdalen. Also with a car you could get to Herdalseter from the little village of Norddal north of Geiranger which would also be perfect for a short hike.

The Sunnmore museum is just outside of Alesund with an extensive collection of old buildings in a park and lots of old wooden boats.

You have received some very good suggestions so far. Common to many of them is that travel outside Ålesund city is involved. With some execptions this is best done by rental car as many of the suggested routes are not convenient to do as day-trips by public transport.

Some more additional excursions in addition to the ones suggested by the others:

- Drive to Tafjord and surrounding area: Spectacular mountains and narrow valleys and fjord. Drive the narrow scenic roads built during the period when the hyrdoelelctric power plants and dams were built. Not visited by many foreign tourists, but used a lot by norwegians, both as a starting point for high altitude hiking, but also just for weekend excursions with car. Maybe a short simple hike to Muldal farm and waterfall.

- Drive to Strandafjellet and take the gondola lift to the mountain Roalden. This is mainly a facility used for skiing in the winter, but this summer the main lift is open every day. Wonderful views of the fjord landscape if the weather is good (which it is not today, but it looks like it will improve in the coming days).
