Cruise ship: Bergen - what to see

Hi - our ship docks morning and departs late afternoon. We don't want to do any of the ship's excursions but would prefer to do Bergen ourselves. The funicular to Mount Floien interests us, also the steam train, but the train might prove more difficult. In fact several highlights of the ship excursions appeal to us, but it all sounds so rushed, doing 6/7 venues in 3 hours!

Any suggestions as to what "we must not miss". We have been to Norway many times but would like to get the best from each port.

Bergen is compact, you can just stroll around. Do the mount Fløyen if that appeals to you. There is no steam train in Bergen. For more info, please consult the official tourism web-site, take a look at the top 10 and see what would interest you. There is the Hanseatic Wharf (Bryggen) and other historical buildings along the waterfront.

Thanks Klimaflyktning - you are always so prompt. Ah, good to see the correct spelling of Floyen! Our cruise guide spells it differently! We like the idea of ambling along the waterfront, but the Hanseatic Wharf sounds interesting and we will definitely do the funicular. Many people tell us, including our Norwegian friends, that is ALWAYS rains in Bergen, so we'll go expecting that and then if it's fine, it will be a bonus for us.

Would we need the service of taxis for some of the Top 10 attractions to visit in Bergen and are they near the ship docks please?

I have a Norwegian keyboard with the appropriate Ø, that may explain why I mangage to spell correctly :)

Depends a bit where your ship docks and if you are dependent on a shuttle. If you can tell which ship and what day I can probably find out. For Mount Ulriken you can use the ho-ho bus. If composer Grieg's home is of interest, you will need a taxi.

Having just returned from Bergen when there were two cruise ships in dock you should be aware that the queue for the funicular can be extremely long, both up and down. If you are reasonably fit it's a very enjoyable walk up to the top through some of the old parts of Bergen but it will take about an hour to walk up and half an hour down. I'd suggest you go to the funicular as soon as possible and hopefully beat the queue, then maybe just walk down. It certainly does not always rain in Bergen - it was 18 degrees and blue skies last Wednesday (though it did rain in the evening .....). Well worth taking an umbrella.

For Edvard Grieg's home and mount Ulriken you need transport. Unless you are interested in classical/romantic music, Troldhaugen may not be very interesting. Ulriken you can skip if you do Fløyen, its more of the same.

Re.: Reply #2 - to use the special Norwegian characters æøåÆØÅ either copy and paste from another reply or in Windows use character map: Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Character Map . Apple users will find a similar system, but you'll have to Google for that. That little extra effort in spelling Norwegian place names will be much appreciated.
