Looking for advice on quick side trip to Bergen

Hello - After wrapping up a trip in Stockholm in early July '13, thinking of taking train to Bergen via Oslo. Questions:

That time of the year, would we be missing the scenery if we took the evening train from Oslo to Bergen?

Would like to do a fjord tour, but likely no more than a half-day or day. Any recommendations?

Other than the fjord, would likely spend some time around town and a trip to the top of Mt. Floyen. Any guidance about this is also appreciated.

Regards,

Mark

You will not be missing any scenery by taking the afternoon train.

A fjord tour is possible as a side trip en route to Bergen, but then you will have to start in the morning.

Fjords are at some distance from Bergen, you will need a full day for a fjord excursion.

There is 23 hour daylight in July, so the sun is still up at 11 in the evening.

If you do not visit fjords as a detour between Oslo and Bergen, I recommend a full day to Hardanger or Sognefjord (Flåm/Gudvangen). The fjords near Bergen are nice, but modest compared to the iconic fjords further east (inland).

Downtown Bergen is compact, so my advice is simply to stroll. I wouldn't focus too much on the hyped Fishmarket. But a stroll around the fortress/castle, the old (German) wharf "Bryggen" is mandatory, one of the historically most important settlements in Norway. Also stroll from the main square to the Nordnes peninsula is recommended. The Lepra museum is an unusal attraction.

Mt Fløyen is a 5 min ride on the Funicular. You can also stroll up there, lots if easy paths. For the ordinary fit, walking up or down Fløyen is nice too.

Thanks, all, for your recommendations. Very helpful. One quick follow-up question: Since we're going to Bergen by train, is there a bus or some mode of transportation to get to where fjord tours of Hardanger or Sognefjord start?

Thanks again!

No need for transportation. Tours of the Sognefjord (Norway in a Nutshell) start from the train station. Tours of the Hardangerfjord (Hardanger in a Nutshell) start from the train station or the bus station, two blocks from the train station.
