Cycling and wild camping in Hordaland - local advice?

Hi all!

I'm planning a trip to the beautiful fjords around Bergen in June. I intend to rent a bike at this place before setting off for a week long cycling tour of the local countryside. I'm hoping to get by through a mixture of wild camping and hostel, guesthouse or campsite stays during my trip.

I've pasted a link below to the route I have planned. I've put white dots to mark each day's cycling. As you can see I'm not planning anything too strenuous!

If anyone has any advice on places to stay - like affordable guesthouses or campsites on the route - or even places to avoid, different routes to take, anything of that nature, please let me know!

I hope this works!!

Please read a recent discussion on this topic: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g190502-i934-k6361…

The itinerary you have put on the map involves cycling E16 from Bergen to Trengereid and E39 from Os to Bergen. These are main roads with heavy traffic and many tunnels and must absolutely be avoided for a cyclist.

I do think it is possible to get around on older and smaller roads on these legs in and out of Bergen, you need to zoom in on google maps to find them and work some more on planning your itinerary in detail. In some cases where the main road makes a shortcut through a mountain in a tunnel, following the old road may be a considerable detour.

It's really quite a long way from Bergen to the fjords and there are some very unpleasant and busy roads for cycling in and around the city. Also lots of tunnels on the main road between Bergen and Voss which you are not allowed to cycle through. I'd suggest you go by bus to Norheimsund and hire a bike there, then keep to the small roads to the east of Bergen. If you want to visit the city take a bus from Osoyro for example. Another starting point would be Voss, and then you could include Ulvik and Eidfjord at the innermost end of the Hardangerfjord. The 'inside' of the hook shaped Hardangerfjord also has some nice quiet roads and fairly flat (Utne, Jondal etc.)

You have a right to camp wild in Norway with just a few restrictions, but I would recommend instead using cabins on campsite which are quite cheap and don't need to be booked in advance. You will need your own camping stove, equipment and sleeping bag in the cheapest ones, but there will always be a central building with showers etc. Would be good to have a lightweight tent with you just in case you don't find a convenient campsite, or if you should be blessed with good weather when camping wild can be idyllic.

Camping in roadside picnic areas is not recommended and socially unacceptable.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I've made a few changes to the route to take into account your points. This avoids the E16 and E39, and as far as I can tell, also avoids any large roads and tunnels but it's difficult to say without local knowledge - Google Streetview is only so helpful!

And understood that I would be better off using campsites. I'd love to as long as there are some along the route. However I've struggled to find many. The only affordable place I've found so far is Olve Gjestehus http://www.olvegjestehus.no/

Thanks again for all your thoughts!

Hang on - I just noticed I did not avoid the E39 the entire way. I think this route does a better job....

There is also the section near Arna, but it looks like there's a serviceable old road I can use. If there are any other bits I need to look at closer, I'd be very grateful for any help.

Better, but there are still some tunnels and main roads on your map. f.ex. the 2km long Arnanipa tunnel. It is very clear to see where the tunnels are when you zoom in. Some more work is needed :-)

Better route but still a lot of tunnels to be avoided from Arna to road 7 and arduous cycling from there to Norheimsund. What about just going south out of Bergen and ending up at Rosendal or somewhere else at the southern end of the Hardangerfjord and take an express boat back to Bergen? Timetables and routes at www.skyss.no .

You might be able to use the new light railway through the busiest part of Bergen to Nesttun but I'm not sure if you can take bikes on it. Local knowledge anyone?

Thanks iverh. I'm going to take a closer look this evening as you suggest.

Also, I've spotted a campsite near Norheimsund - thanks for the tip Norsc - so I should be able to get by with only a couple nights wild camping.

I feel like the route is starting to become a bit more realistic now..

Norsc, thanks for your response again - is road 7 very hilly or is there something else which makes it arduous?
