I will be in Oslo and then driving from Oslo to Ulvik to Flam to Oslo. Should I expect to pay tolls on the roads? How are tolls administered in Norway -- are there toll booths?
Most toll roads in Norway are automatic. Toll booths are removed and the cars have toll tags. Rental cars are also equipped with toll tags. The car rental agency will charge the toll charges to your credit card on file.
I'm pretty sure there will be toll roads driving from Oslo to Ulvik, but don't have the exact details so others will have to comment. I don't worry about toll roads while driving in Norway, it is not like the US where you have non-toll roads parallell to the toll roads. We only have one option and if it includes tolls we cannot avoid it in most cases.Edited: 8:40 am, March 23, 2014
There are toll roads pretty well everywhere and definitely coming into Oslo. In all cases it's just drive under an overhead camera/sensor arrangement - you'll hardly notice (until you get the bill). Typical costs are NOK 20 - 30.
Check with the car hire co. how they deal with tolls and if they add any fee on top of the tolls charge.
Here's another link that might be interesting http://www.autopass.no/Visitors/Visitors%27+Payment
If you use http://visveg.vegvesen.no/Visveg/ when planning the trip, all toll fees wil be stated.
