Car Rental in Oslo near DFDS Port

Can anyone recommend a rental car agency near the port? We are arriving via DFDS Ferry and need to rent a car. We will return the car in Bergen.

Thank you.

Be aware that renting a car in Norway is relatively expensive, particularly if you drop off in a different city.

Downtown Oslo is relatively compact. Check out the standard agencies (with offices in many towns allowing drop off) such as Hertz, Avis, Budget. Use Google Maps or Gulesider.no and they will appear on the map.

Hertz, Avis, Budget and Europcar all have agencies within 2km from the DFDS terminal. Check their prices for your dates before choosing.

Rates have actually come down quite a bit this year, though still high compared to most other countries. The car rental link at www.norwegian.com is usually the best way of seeing all the options at the best prices. Expect to pay at least NOK1000 + 25% tax as a one way charge for dropping off in Bergen.

Thank you all. I will check out the above links. 2km seems rather far to walk with luggage (and children). I'll have to see if they can meet us at the port.

Again, many thanks.

Personalized services such as meeting at the port is not so common in Norway, although some may offer that. Consider a taxi.

On Google Maps you will see that cruise ships dock at Akershus castle (next is City Hall), few businesses and shops right there.

Good site for finding car hire in Norway is

http://www.finn.no/r/leiebiler/

In Norwegian so use Chrome browser on a PC for translation. Look up both Oslo and Bergen, then you will know which companies operate in both locations.

Remember there are many possibilities to get a significant discount with car hire - credit cards, auto associations, airline miles cards etc. etc. you just need a discount code.

Note that from an earlier thread it appeared that brokers do not get good prices for car hire in Norway - check directly with the car hire companies and compare prices before hiring through a third party.

And also note that there is a difference in car hire culture between US and Europe. It is not normal here to use your own insurance. Check directly with the company what your insurance liability/excess will be, and how much it costs to reduce this if you want to.

Brokers like Holiday Autos don't usually offer very good rates in Norway, but what are effectively price comparison web sites do (like the one on the Norwegian airline link posted above). If you use a local rental company rather than an international franchise, do check the details carefully - some offer only limited mileage and it can get very expensive if you drive further. You should be able to get delivery to the ferry port, but will probably cost more than a short taxi ride.
