Flam Railroad

We have a rental car in Norway. Is it still worth taking the Flam Railroad trip or can you see essentially the same scenery by car? Thanks

to AndybinLondon:

This would depend a bit on how used your kids are to steep slopes. Only the first bit after a couple of hundred metres from Myrdal (867 metres asl) is steep in particular, a height difference of around 300 metres down the mountainside to the bottom of the valley with 21 hairpin curves.

The road itself is graveled and fairly narrow but due to rain, snow, melting water etc. the condition isn't very good, and there are several mid-sized rocks there which may hamper a regular ride down. Indeed, it is recommended to get off your bike and walk down this part instead (which most people don't feel like doing anyway). The rest of the road doesn't have as steep slopes, it is more stretched out.

Be aware that the amount of hikers has increased over the years - it seems now as if it is more popular to hike than bike (although it is a bit of a walk - 21 km), so you may not want to turn it into a race track..
