Oslo- help with half day sights, airport transfer and hotel

We are a budget minded US midwestern family of four- mom, dad and 2 girls aged 9 + 10.

We fly into Oslo at 10am and unfortuantely only have one afternoon in Oslo before we start the Norway in a Nutshell trip the next morning.

We plan on doing the Norweigen Folk Museum and Viking Ship Museum in the afternoon as we think the kids will enjoy these.

I'm sure we will have time to walk around a bit but wondered if there are any more "must see" sights that we should try to fit in?

What's the best way to get from the the Oslo International AIrport to the center of Oslo? How much time will this take?

We are staying at the Thon Hotel Munch. Does anyone have anything to say about this hotel- good or bad?

Many, many thanks, Kathy

Hi Emily, and welcome to Oslo and Norway.

For reviews of Thon Hotel Munch, put the hotel name in the search cloumn on this site and you will find quite a few.

I recommend that you buy yourself an Oslo Pass for one day - it offers free public transport as well as free entrance to most museums and attractions:

You can buy it at the Tourist Information Center just otside the railway station (called Trafikanten).

For transport to Bygdøy (peninsula with the locations of the Folk Museum and the Viking ships) bus no. 30 is recommended. Leave the bus at the Folk Museum - and afterwards you only have a couple of minutes walk to the Viking ships. The Folk Museum has several special activities for children - ask at the entrance and look up this site:

After these I recommend that you go on to the end stop of the bus route at Bygdøynes, where you can have a small ferry on your return to the city center (City Hall pier). At Bygdøynes you also find three other museums, of which a couple might be interesting - the Kon-Tiki, the Fram and the Maritime museums.

For other ideas about what to do in Oslo you can look up this site:

Here you will also find special information about activities, attractions and sights for children as well as special activities on the day you are visiting etc.

The quickest connection from Oslo airport to city center is by the Airport Express (20 minutes):

Other options are the ordinary InterCity trains which stop at the airport (some 40 minutes for the city):

or the airport bus (40 minutes):

If you like a preview of your choice of museums, here are a couple of albums ("Se lysbildevisning" means "View slideshow"; "Neste" means "Next"; "Hastighet" means "Speed"):

The Folk Museum

The Viking ships

Hope this helps !
