Visiting norway & sweden northern lights a priority

We are three retirees ( we need to travel on budget, but will do what it takes). Who want to visit Norway and Sweden in 2014 or 2015. We are are thinking to fly (from USA) into Bergen and take train tour to Oslo. Then fly(?) to Tromso to see NL. From there we could return to either Bergen or Oslo or go directly to Sweden. We have really good flexibility with time. I am guessing allowing two nites in Tromso for best chance to see NL. I read season for NL is Sept to March. We can come pretty much any time in that period. When is "best"? We'll be using planes, trains and buses...any advice here helps.

The best time is a cloudless night and solar activity any time between those times! In midwinter the days are very short with the sun not rising. Days longer towards September and March. Obviously very cold in winter and warmer in September . September you will gave fab autumn colours and say December to March it will be snow covered. So there is no ideal time.

To maximise your time you should spend up to a week in the Tromso area. Only 2 days severely cuts your chances of seeing them. The weather is unpredictable and often is cloud coveted or no solar activity.

Remember there is no guarantee you will see them. Don't go just to see the NL's you are likely to be disappointed.

If you also want to see the NiN from Bergen, including the train to Oslo, go in September!

Then you also will get the lovely view to the nature colored in the autumn colors.

For the Northern lights we recommend to stay here in the north at least 5 nigths for increase your chances to get a good show.

From Tromsø you can fly directly to Stockholm.

Another thing you can do is to fly to Bodø and then take ths ship, http://hurtigruten.com to Tromsø via the Lofoten islands.

If you need some snowy activities then you should do your travel in February - March, but then it`s not so great to do the Fjords...

Thank you, we are going to make our own travel arrangements to come to Norway as in England the travel companies packages are VERY expensive!
