Places to drive to around Tromso

Hi All,

Off to Tromso next week, will be hiring a car and was just wondering if anyone can recommend any good places to visit around Tromso (ideally within an hours drive).

We'll probably spend a day in Tromso but don't really have any plans for the rest of the week (other than trying to spot the NL at night). Have ruled out dog sledding as it's too expensive.

We like nature, scenery, local culture etc. Any nice villages?

Thanks in advance.

You could drive almost anywhere to for a scenic tour, but don't miss Lyngseidet and the Lyngen peninsula. Do be very cautious about driving around looking for the Northern Lights - you can't possibly drive safely in winter conditions while looking at the sky. One second of inattention and you can be in the ditch, hit another car or much worse. Much better to join a guided group trip with someone who knows the best places to go and safe places to stop off the road. Guides can also talk to each other so they know where the lights can be seen best on nights with partial cloud cover. Dog sledding is expensive for good reasons - it's costs a lot of money to keep lots of dogs in good health all year round to pull sleds for only a few months. They are not pets. Fantastic experience though, you'll remember it long after you have forgotten what it cost. If you haven't already hired a car I'd save the cost and spend it on guided trips and activities. There are quite good bus services for scenic tours, including to Lyngen. I am not a guide or activity provider by the way, just someone who wants you to have the best possible experience in Norway.

We were in Tromso last March and we arrived to cold weather and icy roads. We hired a car, with studded tyres, and the driving was easy. Some of the roads were covered in ice but no problems with studded tyres, just drive slower and more cautiously. There is not a lot of traffic on the roads.

We drove out to Sommaroy, on the coast west of Tromso. A nice drive and at Sommaroy there is a hotel for coffee or lunch. We were lucky and had clear weather on the coast and it was along this road that we saw the NL's. Keep an eye out for suitable places to stop. There are quite a few laybyes. If you are unsure if you are looking at the NL's or whispy cloud, just take a photo and if it's NL's they will show up green. No need to keep looking as you go along, if they are there they will be everywhere. Then just wait and hopefully as your eyes adjust they will intensify. It was magical to be on our own, not in a group and watch them. We watched for about 2 hours.

Take the E8 inland towards Nordkjosbotn and then on the E6 north and then 868 to Lyngen, continue on the 91 back towards Tromso. Makes a good day trip.

We did dook one NL trip with a guide which turned out to be not necessary for us but we did it. We were lucky and had completely clear skys and good aurora activity and so didn't have to drive far as we only needed to get away from ambient light. The advantage of a guide is if you need to drive towards Finland, a long drive or if there are just gaps in the cloud.

There are coaches that go out from infront of the Rica Hotel, no need to book inadvance. Lots of people but cheaper. However nothing beats standing on your own in silence looking at the NL's.

Do remember there is no guarantee you will see them, enjoy Tromso and Norway for the wonderful scenery it offers. There's not too much to see in Tromso so a car is great to get out and see the country. Have a good trip.
