Tromso to Nordkapp

Hi,

Can someone give advice on how to get from Tromso to Nordkapp by public transport?

Are there buses that go direct or ferries? And how long each takes? Which is more scenic?

Thanks

Audrey

There are no buses that go direct, you need to change and stay overnight in Alta. Net travel time 10,5 hours.

There is an overnight ship connection:

In your view, is it worth it to travel all the way up to Nordkapp or is it sufficient to stop at Alta?

In total, it takes 15 hrs from Tromso to Nordkapp by bus?

How about if driving by car from Tromso to Nordkapp?

For some it is a big goal going to Nordkapp. Personally, I am not a big fan and the landscape is bleak and barren and rather desolate.

I would have stayed put in Tromsø and done some excursions along the fjords (Lyngen), the islands (Sommarøy, Senja). A car would be useful.

"Bleak, barren, desolate" .... unhuh. Also can be fog bound so you can't even see the sea. AND it's not the most northerly point in Europe. AND it's a looooong way.

No, stay in and around Tromso. Plenty to do and see.

You can always fly to Alta or Lakselv... But, NC is just a cliff...

What time of the year are you planning for..?

Hi,

Im looking at Feb to March next year actually and understand that it maybe impossible to drive up to Nordkapp as some roads may be closed due to heavy snow.

Alternatively, if im using Tromso as a base to move around and i am interested to see auroras, mountains, lakes and beautiful scenery, Where would you recommend me to travel to? Is it advisable to rent a car or is public transport sufficient?

Do you have tour operators to recommend for excursions along the fjords (Lyngen) and the islands (Sommarøy, Senja)? Or is it doable by DIY as in own booking?

Thanks

Audrey

For a winter drive, then you should quit NC, yes.

Tromso is a great city as base camp, because there are a lot to do there and in the region around.

About 35 companies runs different tours, so you will always find something for everybody.

But, come in March, just because February are to busy!

Senja us lovely in summer, and Sommaroy are 60 km away from Tromso. You have many choices here..;)

Welcome to Tromso and Arctic Norway, and happy chasing..;)

Thanks Gunnar.

So do you suggest renting a car to drive around and visit the areas around Tromso or to go with tour operators?

For Senja, can you advice what there is to do there? Viewing fjords?

Also, what is there to do in Sommaroy?

Where is good for viewing Northern Lights in Tromso too?

Cheers

The Northern lights you can view all over where there are clear sky. The guides are driving you to the best locations!

If you like to rent a car and drive by your self, be prepare for icy roads and snowstorm, in the darkness.

Sommaroy is a lovely place with nice beaches, totally different from rest of the mountains area.

Fjords you can see all over, around Tromso too. Senja is a long day drive away, but you can do it as a day trip. In March the days are longer...
