What to do in tromso..

I am taking my girlfriend to tromso for a short break this coming weekend for out anniversairy(booked it all a bit late as usual..). I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on any recommended activities and sights while we are there. We will be there for 4 full days over the weekend and were hoping to see the Northern Lights.

Some specific questions i had were:

1) Can we book activities when we get there or should i try and book before we arrive?

2) would it be worth renting a car for a day or two to drive out and see the fjords?

3) I've seen that you can book trips to go out and find the northern lights in cloudy weather. Is this necessary or will we be able to see the lights from tromso or by hiring a car and driving out of town a bit to get away from the street lights etc..

I was also hoping to do some sort of nice romantic activity on our actual anniversairy (saturday) so any advice on things to do would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks.

I'd at least go for one of the dogsledding options. Getting out in the wilderness is a great way to see the northern lights - and with nothing else in sight it can be extremely romantic (unless one or more of you are allergic to dogs). Just think of it - lying under the northern lights with (almost) noone else around in utter silence... [sigh]

As for the fjords you'll actually standing in the middle of one when in Tromso, as the town it self is mainly build on an island in the middle of a fjord.

Driving can be difficult if you're not used to the slippery conditions. So a boat trip might be better bet, where you also can include fishing if you wish.

As for booking it's up to you. If theres something you've really set your eyes on book now. Other things can wait until you get there and have a chat with the touristoffice.

We were there last summer, and we took a cable car to the top of a summit where there was a wonderful panoramic view. We also visited the Arctic Cathedral nearby.

The cable car doesn't run in winter.

Feel free to take a look at my Tromsø page on Virtual Tourist - travel tips and photos, info about northern lights tours among other things - I currently live in Tromsø.
