Where to go in Nordland?

I just booked three days in Reine, Lofoten. We will have a rental car, which we are picking at the airport in Leknes. We have to eventually end up in Eastern Norway (Lillehammer, Hedmark, Oslo) to visit relatives, but we have about three days available for some other adventure. The choices may include:

1. Keep the rental car. Drive to somewhere not so far from a Lofoten. Where? I know nothing of the area.

2. Fly from Leknes to Bergen. Drive to Lillehammer, via Sogndal, Route 55...Loma...Otta...Lillehammer. I have done this three times in the past, and will never get tired of the beautiful scenery

3. Fly from Leknes to somewhere else. Where??? We are most interested in beautiful nature...fjords and mountains. (Okay, I know there are a lot of those in Norway, but not so much in the east, where my family lives). Three days at that "somewhere else" place, then fly to Oslo and visit the relatives.

I'd greatly appreciate any opinions. We are a healthy couple in our 60s. But not really into hiking or fishing.

Thanks!

Leknes are just a small city / village in the Lofoten island, in Nordland county in Northern Norway, about 1500 km north of Bergen and Lillehammer.

So, I recommend that you should stay at least a week in Lofoten with a rental car, and do;

Å - Reine - ferry to Vindstad and walk to Bunesstranda - Nusfjord - Flakstad beach - Haukeland beach - Lofotr Viking museum - Henningsvær - Svolvær ... take a night at http://www.svinoya.no

If you take two weeks you could explore Vesterålen too, and 3 weeks; Hamarøy and Steigen also...

I assume you plan to travel in summer. If you want to travel out of the Lofoten Islands, you could go island hopping.

Take the ferry to the Vesterålen Islands, drive their scenic road

Take the ferry to Senja iland, drive the scenic road

Take the ferry to Tromsø, fly to Oslo or Bergen.

Thanks, GuideGunnar and Klimaflyktning for interesting advice. I have to research those alternatives. "Island hopping" would be something new for us.

How about flying from Leknes to Molde. Then drive to Eidsvang, Sunndalsøra , Oppdal, then Lillehammer? Has anyone travelled that route? Sounds rather adventurous. This would be in late June.

When you have some of the best scenery Norway has to offer at your feet, why go somewhere else. Flying from Leknes to Molde is expensive, you need two changes and you will loose a full day to travelling.

BWAAAWH! Klimaflyktning, that was some good advice you gave. Indeed, Leknes-Molde is about 1900 kroner ($380) and 7-8 hours!!! That's a killer.

I'm completely unfamiliar with Nordland. Off to research Vesterålen Islands.

From Reine you could easily take the ferry from Moskenes across to Bodo and rent another car there. It's not the most beautiful city but some wonderful scenery in the area, really interesting history and geology, Saltstraumen tidal current, the old and incredibly scenic village of Kjerringoy, all within easy reach on day trips, or you could go further down the coast on the Kystriksveien road.

If you have a car in Reine be aware there are major road works on the one road from there to the rest of Lofoten, so plan your days to travel either early or late.
