Roads will most likely be covered by ice, packed snow or slush. If you have very little experience driving in real winter, this may be challenging. All rent cars will be fitted with winter tires, studded tires are the best.

We drove in March, Skoda Yeti with winter tyres, and had no problems. There had been a heavy snowfall just before we arrived and the roads were icey. The studded tyres have amazing grip but drive carefully and take things easy. If you are sensible, know your limits, you shouldn't have problems.

You need to keep an eye on the weather forecast and plan accordingly. We went out in the day and sought out suitable sights to stop and see the NL's. we had amazing sightings and it was truly magical as we were on our own watching. We stood for several hours, it was freezing so you do need appropriate clothing.

Have a good trip.

I think we did this trip (can't find all your places on google maps), we went out to Sommaroy and think your timings are ok. There is a good hotel at Sommeroy for a quick snack.

We stopped on the road from Sommaroy to Ersfjorboten to see the NL's. Coming from Tromso the road climbs and then flattens to a bit of a plateau, there's a frozen lake. There are several laybys, when we were there the snow drifts were 6 foot high. It was a good spot for the NL's, little traffic and a layby to ourselves.

Enjoy

Tromsø is quite cloudy. On the other hand, Skibotn, about 1,5 hours away, is one of the driest places - and hence clearest - in the country. Many "light chasers" take their guests here.

The Sommarøy road is beautiful, but normally it's easier to spot the lights in the interior.

The chasers have a network of informers they use in order to decide whether to take to the islands or to the interior.

If you go by yourself, you need mittens, thick jackets, warm boots etc. There are few cafés. Bring a blanket, bring a flask with hot drink and sandwiches.
