Suggested route: Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, Frankfurt , ( Koblenz) Cologne, Amsterdam.

You could stay overnite in Koblenz and take a short trip on the Rhein, south of Koblenz. Your best bet would be to take a local train from Koblenz upriver to one of the villages/towns along the river, and then return to Koblenz by boat, going downriver (faster).

Check www.bahn.de, as suggested. The local trains are designated as "Regios". And also check KD Rheinschiffahrt for boats.

For your long distance trips, EC's and IC's and especially ICE's are the way to go. Get seat reservations. You can get these in Vienna for all trip sections (except Regios), best half a day before departure.
