Walking in the hills around Grinzing

We plan to take tram #38 out to Grinzing for a few hours of walking in the hills (e.g., Kahlenberg or Leopoldsberg) and would like to know the best way to do this. A loop of 5-7 km would be ideal. Preferably, we would like to end in Grinzing for a late lunch or dinner.

From Grinzing take bus 38A to either Kahlenberg or Leopoldsberg. There are signed walks in the Vienna Woods you can follow. But afterwards I'd avoid touristy Grinzing. Instead walk down through the vineyards to Heiligenstadt and Nussdorf for your meal.

Thanks for this information. Which (Kahlenberg or Leopoldsberg) one is more scenic? Which is shorter? And any particular place you can recommend in Heilgenstat or Nussdorf to eat? We'd also like to drink some gruner vetliner and other local wine. Any recommendations for that as well?

We very much enjoyed Zum Renner on Nussdorfplatz in Nussdorf. There is a beautful garden in which to eat as well as charming inside rooms. The food is delicious and AMPLE! Farther up the hill and close to the end of the D Tram are the heurigers. Our favorite was Schuebel-Auer Heuriger, where we also ate outside in the garden. The food was wonderful! It is typical heuriger food with an abundance of cheeses, cold cuts, spreads, salads, and breads. We ate the cold selections but there were warm dishes as well. The return to Vienna is an easy trip on the D Tram.

Can't argue with Neferteria's suggestions - I like them both. But on the walk down you will pass many wine gardens (including Hirt and Sirbu right in the vineyards) and if one takes your fancy just drop in. I don't think there's a bad one in either village.

Exit the bus at Kahlenberg (large parking lot). Walk towards the church for the amazing view of Vienna. Walk back towards the parking lot and look for the board with the map of Stadtwanderweg 1. The walk is marked with wooden posts and will lead you through the forests, vineyards. The walk passes several outdoor heurigen and will end right in front of Scheubel-Auer

Our desire for a walk in the Kahlenberg-Grinzing hills has crystallized, thanks to your replies. One of us has knee issues, so we prefer to walk up to Kahlenberg rather than down. But we are afraid that 11km may be too much for us. Is it possible to begin our walk a bit higher up on city walking trail 1A than Nussdorf or Heilgenstat? And is there bus service from Kahlenberg to Grinzing? We would like to put together a loop of no more than 8km walking on trail 1A with a bus down from Kahlenberg to Grinzing.

The walk down is not steep and far less than 11km. I have knee problems and manage it easily.

From where to where exactly is less than 11km? I saw 11km on a city map online from Nussdorf to Kahlenberg on city trail 1A.

From Kahlenberg to Nussdorf. The walk you are looking at is from Nussdorf up to Kahlenberg, walk around and then back down again. Just down is 3 or 4km or so.
