Notable Microbreweries in Vienna?

I've done a couple searches online and in the forum, I can't seem to find much in the way of breweries in Vienna. I'm looking for a laid back type of atmosphere where I can enjoy a good glass of beer, but also get a tour and learn some of the history behind the brewery process. I've found a couple places but I was wondering if anyone had any first-hand experience with a brewery in Vienna. Thanks in advance.

There are a few places (Salmbraeu, Siebersternbraeu, Wiedner Braeu, 1516 to name a few) in Vienna which brew their own beer, but they don't give tours, etc. These places are restaurants. Other notable beer drinking places are the Schweizerhaus in the Prater and Stiegl Ambulanz in the Altes AKH, but these do not brew on site. I am pretty sure that Ottakringer, which is one of the major beer producers in Austria, doesn't do tours. Overall, Vienna isn't really a "beer" town - more of a coffee, cake and wine town.

The Czech Republic is the place for beer - if you want to make a bit of a detour slightly to the north, in Brno you will find some of the country's best pubs and finest beer - lots of info in the Brno forum.

But otherwise the aforementioned Schweitzerhaus is the place to go in Vienna for proper Czech Budweiser (not the inferior American counterfeit).

I met a couple of students near the Rathaus. When I asked them for a microbrew pub, they said I must visit the Lichtenthaler Brau. I did and I have to say I'm not disappointed. It's laid back and if the brew master is around he'll probably give you a tour of his brew room.

Good tip!

Will be back visiting Vienna after a good few years over Christmas/NY and searching the forum for places such as this.

Thanks again
