More on Wachau Valley

I really like Vertical's bike suggestions for the Wachau valley. However, my husband and I will be in the area in mid-June. We have a Eurail pass. Is it still possible to rent a bike at the train station during the tourist season? Also, as we are no longer "spring chickens", what if we can't peddle the whole way from Melk to Krems? Will the local trains let you bring a bike onboard? Would we need a train reservation?

I would most appreciative of any responses.

You have many alternative ways to make your trip to the Wachau a great pleasure.

Boats regularly make the trip Melk to Krems with stops in Spitz and Dürnstein. They permit people to bring bikes on board. Thus pedal part way - take the boat too.

Or a regional train runs about each hour along the Danube - Emmersdorf ( across the river from Melk) to Krems.

You can also bring bikes on that train.

It stops at about every town along the route.

I am not certain if your rail pass works for this line.

You pay the driver , no conductor ( too small for one) you can show him the pass, but tickets are cheap. No reservations. This is a one car, two at busy times, local line- rfun to ride with great views.

It is only crowded when the school kids go home.

A great alternative to bike riding.
