Between Vienna and Budapest by boat?

We'd like to take a boat from Budapest to Vienna but are not interested in package tours. Is there a ferry system or some other form of water transport available?

Get yourself a nice piece of Dobostorta, Somloi Galuska , Zserbó-szelet,or Rétes and afterwards a Szatmári szilvapálinka in Budapest.

We have totally abandoned the idea of the longer trip, based on what we have read here and elsewhere. Now, we plan to just do the short cruise between Krems and Melk. That area seems to have the most visual interest. Thanks again, everyone!

Tghis portion of the Danube not just beautiful but easily accessed from Vienna.

Consider a visit to Melk Abbey during this trip.

Combi tickets available for train trip from /to Vienna, Melk Abbey admission and boat triip.

This area of the Danube well known for superb wines- if you like wine take a few extra minutes for a tasting.

Great info, thanks! Yes, we are interested in visiting the Abbey.

Do you think there is any advantage to which of the three cruises to take: morning, midday or afternoon? Also, is a round trip the best option or does one take a bus or train back to the starting point?

Many discussions regarding this day trip here - by using the search box above and entering- Melk Abbey - Danube cruise - you can probably find these-

Most leave Vienna Westbahnhof by train early in the morning- make a tour of the Abbey- them a short walk to the boat docks and take the boat downstream - 13:30 +- I think-

then leave the boat at Durnstein or Krems - tour as you wish - then take the late afternoon or evening train directly back to Vienna from Krems.

The boat trip downstream is faster than that up stream - same scenery - so perhaps your time better spent sightseeing at Durnstein or Krems.

Trains back to Vienna from Krems leave about 1 per hour- Journey takes about 1 hour and using this route provides more good sightseeing time.

Yes, I did a Search, but the related posts are old (5 or 6 years), and many have been "closed" to further comment. Lot of things can change in 5 years.

Thanks for the tip about the train/boat combo. That sounds perfect. We will look into it.

TripAdvisor automatically defaults the search results by relevance. This churns up old posts. You need to click on the sort by DATE button to get the most recent discussion. If you search "Wachau" "Krems" or "Melk" tons of discussions come up as recently as just a few days ago. Many of us have responded in recent months with very specific details on this trip - it is not from 5-6 years ago. Really, trust Vertical, you will find good info if you follow these steps.

Ah, I did not notice the DATE button. Thanks, Cherries! Funny, you would think the Search engine itself would rank things by chronology, just to increase relevance.
