Vienna to Cesky Krumlov

We are hoping to do a day trip to Cesky Krumlov from Vienna in December this year. Is it worth going there and back in a day?

Also, what would be the best / quickest method of travel in December? Any advice appreciated.

I do not think that it is worth going there - especially in December when dusk commences early. You need to take the red-eye service from Vienna via Gmünd to Ceske Budejovice where a local train then takes you to Cesky Krumlov. Here is some information of Austrian Railways ÖBB about a special ticket: oebb.at/en/…index.jsp

Your choices of trtsavel are limited - train or shuttle -

But this way taskes considersble time 41/2 hours plus each way .

December with late rising and early setting sun certasinly not helping this trip.

Your time better used sightseeing in Vienna including time at the Christmas Markets.

Also in winter the castle in Český Krumlov is closed so the place is deserted (it is almost exclusively tourist-oriented so there are very few locals). It is very nice at that time of year for this reason, but not as a day trip from Vienna.

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like it will be too much to fit in.

Unfortunately we will be after Christmas so will miss the markets in Vienna.

Any other suggestions of what we can see in Vienna? We have been there once before, which is why we thought we we look at a day trip somewhere.

We finish our Europe travels in Munich, maybe we would be better to go from there and stay overnight in Cesky Krumlov?

It is even more difficult to reach Český Krumlov from Munich - the easiest way is from Prague, from where it is a 3,5 hour bus ride each way. As I said above, it is a tourist trap which shuts down in winter and is IMO a little bit bit overrated - there are many more places like that which are off the tourist path.

I can only really speak for the Czech Republic/Slovakia, but in the vicinity of Vienna, for example, is Mikulov mikulov.cz/tourism/introduction-of-the-town/ which is just as beautiful as CK and sits exactly on the Austrian-Czech border - it is just about feasible in a day via Breclav.

There are plenty of things in and around Vienna, though.
