New Years Eve in Vienna

Our first visit to Vienna - we'll be staying at Palais Schwarzenberg and attending the New Years Eve ball. Also have tickets for the Vienna Hopsburg Orchestra at the Imperial Palace on New Year's Day and ballet at the State Opera. Looking forward to dressing for the occassions - very formal for the ball? New Year's Day concert? Will a fur coat (my warmest garment) be acceptable? What are the best places for traditional Viennese dining? We prefer this to new, trendy establishments - very old fashioned are we!

Several very nice News Years Balls are held in different locations.

One, largest, traditional, and most expensive is in the Hofburg Palace and is formal. Man- Tuxedo- Woman- a long and good gown. You will see some men wearing their medals and Orders. Women in good jewelry.

Two types of tickets- one includes dinner ( not that great) and the other admittance at 10 PM. without food, but a buffet is available for a fee.

This Ball is held in numerous rooms in the Palace and has non stop music. Of couse , The Main Ball Room is most desirable.

Another in Palace Ferstel is less formal - most in tuxedos and long gowns. an occasional dark suit. usually excelent food with wine included. Good music.

Other venues would generally be similar as people tend to dress up and well for this evening.

A fur coat is acceptable to wear to the Ball. It most be checked as you enter.

Sorry to say that your New Years Concert is not the one you have probably seen on TV, 8 This is in the Musicverein by the Vienna Philharmonic) but one of lesser popularity. or I believe it to be by your description. You will see all types of dress to this- suit for a man nice dress for a woman is OK

This isprobably the Habsburg Orchestra in the Hofburg Palace.

Music will be OK.

For traditional dining try Plachutta on Wollziele 38

Forgot to mention Ballet- Generally, the State Opera only performs operas near to New Years. The last Ballet is December 28th- yours?

People- usually well dressed- but unfortunately you will see a little of everything.

Your hotel is very nice- Take time to visit both the Upper and Lower Belvedere Palaces ( nearby) while you are there.

The Streetcar " D" runs by there and it is a good way to get to the Opera, city center and many other sights.

People will use it to go the the Balls- best to have a taxi to go back to the hotel after the Ball. Staff will call one for you.
