Weekend Getaways from Vienna

My husband has a business meeting in Vienna at the Hilton and I have the chance to go with him for an impromptu 25th wedding anniversary trip. We could extend our dates to include the Sunday/Mon/Tues before the meeting begins and Fri/Sat/Sun after it ends for weekend getaways.

We must fly into Vienna, but since we've spent several days there in the past, would like to venture elsewhere for a weekend getaway. We went to Salzburg, Halstatt and Melk on the last trip.

Any recommendations? Thank you!

What about the southern part of Styria (wine-country, castle route, thermal spa region), including Graz (Austria´s 2nd largest city with a nice, old historic city center) and maybe visiting Rust at the lake Neusiedlersee on your way back.

For staying overnight I love the Castle of Kapfenstein in the Southeast Styrian wine country:

Many alternatives -

A visit to the wachau area of the danube-

www.wachau.at

wine country fantastic scenery - Town of Dürnstein, a romantic evening dining on the Schloss Dürnstein terrace overlooking the danube by candlelight.Mautern ,Stift Gottweig .

Area of Langenlois - not far from the wachau-

www.loisiumhotel.at- nice get away place -pool spa - good food and wine - nearby such places as Brundlmayer winery with nice garden for dining-

a summer opereta - Csardasfurstin in an intimate setting in the garden of an old castle .

www.operettansommer.at

the town of Baden- a spa and casino- nice selection of hotels.

The area of the Neusiedlersee - Rust - Morbisch- also a summer stage in Morbisch-for operetta .

www.rust.at

not my favorite area but many like it .

All of the above about 1 hour from Vienna.

Further away but an easy train ride the city of Graz- very nice old city- best collection of antique arms and armor in the world. nice hotels.

Thank you for the wonderful advice. Unfortunately, I was unable to procure an award seat, and the airfare is now $1700+ so I don't think I'll be joining him. I wish his company would let him get two coach seats instead of the business class seat they buy for him!

I'll save this post in case we ever get another chance to come to Austria!

Can you just fly coach on the same flight? You wouldn't be able to sit together (unless there was another coach seat near yours where he could run off to). However, that is small compared to the fun you'll have in Vienna. I would visit Prague for the weekend, if you do go.
