Dress code Opera house - Carmen

Happily I was able to secure 2 tickets to Carmen for my husband’s bucket list trip. One last question, dress code.... Suit and tie...cocktail dress???

Thanks everyone for helping me make this an amazing trip for him.

You can wear just about anything you want. Jeans and t-shirt is fine as is dinner jacket and lbd.

It rather depends on the category of your ticket. If you are in the cheap seats, maybe jeans would be acceptable. But if this is a special occasion, and you have expensive seats, you will probably want to be a little smarter. Suit, tie, and a nice dress is fine, smart casual is ok, you will fit in.

Personally, I like to show respect to the cast and orchestra by dressing fairly smartly.

There is no dress code for the Opera.

I show my appreciation and respect to the performers by paying handsomely for my ticket and applauding as appropriate. I'll be in Vienna once more at the opera to see Figaro in October and will wear chinos and an open necked shirt (again).

There is NO dress code. Repeat there is ABSOLUTELY NO dress code.

There is no dress code which is enforced - but looking like a slob shows lack of respect for the occasion and for the rest of the audience. It's a pity that the sense for occasions and suitable outer appearance has widely been lost.

Whilst I accept that others are totally entitled to a different view and that no staff will police what you’re wearing I personally like to dress up a bit for the opera. It just feels right in such a wonderfully smart and historic building.

For Austrians there is a dress code which does need no laws and police. One pays respect to artists and fellow visitors who want to spend a special evening.

I never understood this obsession to wear jeans everwhere.

Thank you all. We will indeed dress for the occasion. The Vienna Opera House is a special place and we will treat it as such.
