Over 65's Train Travel. Any offers.

Is there any offer available to people aged 65+ for travel on Austrian trains or buses while visiting the country. Thinking of doing a road trip next year.

There is the Vorteilscard Senior: A discount card that costs 29 Euros and gives you 45 or 50 % (depending on your manner of purchase) for standard-fare tickets. Good for one year.

Thanks Stefan that's interesting. In Spain the Targeta Dorada card costs €6 In Portugal I just show my passport and get 40% discount. For a one off trip to Austria it seems expensive enough. But then again if doing a lot of travel it could be worthwhile.

It depends. You can recoup your investment in one or two journeys, if they are long enough. But you may be better off if you book reduced-fare tickets ahead (called "Sparschiene"). Those do bind you to a specific date and train, though.

Yes, look for discounted fares - available to everyone - instead of embracing seniors discounts. Besides, which trips have you planned so far?

Hoping to fly to Vienna, then to Salzburg then Innsbruck and fly out of Munich with a few side trips from these bases. I would not want to purchase the smaller side journeys online in advance though. I thought that producing a card at the train station on the day of purchase was a good flexible way of doing it.

Between Vienna and Salzburg you can also take Austrian Railways' ÖBB competitor Westbahn, whose regular fares are generally way lower than the regular fares of ÖBB.

They also offer special tickets for seniors (Trafik-Aktiv-Ticket) - Monday to Thursday), which must be bought at a Trafik store though, thus not available on trains. But they also offer other types of discounted tickets, why I would not fixate on senior tickets only.

www.westbahn.at

Buy Salzburg to Innsbruck in advance from ÖBB, same with Innsbruck to Munich.

Just to continue with this thread even though my question is not Vienna related.

I can fly from Dublin to either Munich or Memmingen with Ryanair. My final destination is Innsbruck. Which airport would be the better option to choose. I will be making my way using public transport.

I think the journey from Memmingen is only 17 Kms longer.

I think that should be a new question.
