Ideas of what to do in Innsbruck please?

Hiya,

Me and my partner are going to Innsbruck for a week, from the 3rd or december to the 10th. Just wanted to get ideas of what we should do and see whilst we are there seeing as we have a fair amount of time! We don't mind travelling about a bit either using the buses and such, so any recommendations would be very helpful :)

Thanks very much!

Hi,

First, I think you'll love the Christmas Markets in Innsbruck. We did during our visit late Nov. 2010.

innsbruck.info/en/…christkindlmaerkte.html

worldisround.com/articles/362536/index.html

Actually, many (most) towns and villages hold Advent/Christmas markets. Some that are close to Innsbruck would be:

hall-wattens.at/en/magical-advent-markets-ha…

christmas-markets.it/en/christmas-market-vip…

www.rattenberg.at/en/rattenberg-advent.html

www.brixen.org/en/home.html

The extremely charming Bavarian village of Mittenwald is less than an hour away by train. easy 5 min. walk into Mittenwald's pedestrian zone. The Advent Market starts on Dec. 7th this year.

For a great "mountain experience", on a clear day, take the Nordkettenbahn. It leaves right next to the Innsbruck old town across from the Congress.

Schloss Ambras is worth a visit.

Hope this helps a bit.

My idea is a bit different from the usual places that someone visit, but it can be interesting also for someone who is not into it.

Why don't you go to Bergisel? It's the Olympic ski jumping hill, one of the symbols of the town and very important for ski jumping, being one of the four hills of the Vierschanzentournee. Maybe for someone who is not into ski jumping the hill itself is not interesting, but if you go up there the view is breathtaking. Already near the entrance, when the streets goes up, there are a couple of points from where you have a wonderful view over Innsbruck, then if you pay for your ticket and go up the tower... it's amazing! Plus up there you can find a cafe/restaurant with glass walls, you can take your meal with the Alps all around you. Personally I love their sweets! Going to Bergisel is easy, there are trams from downtown or if you go by foot it's about 15-20 minutes.

Something different as recommended in #1 is to visit Bressanone/Brixen in Italy.

Can get there using the Munich - Verona Intercity service which stops at Innsbruck in 1h30 or alternatively you can take local trains from Innsbruck to Brenner then a local italian train to Bressanone/Brixen

The Intercity would be more convenient and faster but more expensive.

If you had a fixed Itinerary you could book your tickets on www.oebb.at although you may be lucky and still get cheap tickets the day before.

Of course Bressanone/Brixen will have heir own Xmas Markets.

brixen.org/en/…6-christmas-market.html

Apart from the Nordkette which is already in service for the winter If wishing to go up a mountain somewhere (with snow) please be aware that the Ski season is just about starting around the 8th December in the lower ski resorts. Prior to this date if the resorts aren't "open" all mountain facilities will be closed.

Nobody can predict the weather and not unusual for Innsbruck to be snow-free so if you want "alpine" and snow may have to travel.

SEEFELD IN TIROL

www.seefeld.com

Seefeld in Tirol is a pretty village in a nice alpine setting. 35mins from Innsbruck on the Innsbruck - Garmisch - Munich Regional train

Only ~ €5 each way

The ski start isn't due until 8th December so facilites won't be open but if snow the village might be worth a visit

www.oebb.at for Austrian rail

STUBAI GLACIER

As long as the weather is fine you could take the ST bus from Innsbruck to Mutterbergalm (last stop) and a trip up the Stubai Glacier

MITTENWALD

Not visible on the English site but the Karwendelbahn is closed until 19th December

In Innsbruck proper, we really enjoyed several hours in the Volkskunst Museum and the Hofkirche, and we also liked the Hofgarten. For art, the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum.
