Vienna - Salzburg by car - overnight stopover - Gmunden?

We will be traveling by car Vienna - Salzburg and would like to detour via Salzkammergut. It seems like a good idea to break up the long drive by overnight, perhaps in Gmunden or...? The idea would be to depart Vienna late afternoon just to get to the overnight point, then start early in the morning via Ebensee, Halstatt, Wolfgang, Fuchslee for a scenic drive arriving Salzburg early evening. Is this plan as practical as it appears on a map, Gmunden a good stopover?

Yes, Gmunden is great. Make sure you walk across the bridge to the island to see Schloss Orth:

You could then wind your way through the Salzkammergut instead of returning to the autobahn. Don't miss seeing Traunkirchen on the way. It's easily missed because the road goes through a tunnel and you actually have to turn off the road to go to the village:

the road trip from Vienna to Salzburg is just about 3.5 hours, so do you really need a stop off? when I do the journey, I break at a Rosenberger restaurant for an meal. however if you feel it is necessary, then gmunden is a reasonable choice. you can visit the gmundner keramik factory whilst there.

and as lizr says, you can make your way via traunkirchen (fishermans church), ebensee (concentration camp), bad ischl........ detour to hallstatt from there......and on to wolfgangsee and the delights there. how long are you in Salzburg for? if a few days, you may find that an extra day in salzkammergut would be a good idea, there is so much to see there.

I asked about travel dates as the tunnel that takes the traffic around Bad Ischl is going to be closed between October 2013 & March 2014. All traffic will divert through the town. It's part of the preparation for the big garden show in Bad Ischl 2015.

If driving down from Gmunden heading towards Lake Wolfgang traffic may be bad.

Would be better to turn off and head for Lake Attersee on the 153 go around Lake Mondsee and down to St Gilgen. Would be a lovely drive.

If you want to see Hallstatt you will have to drive through Bad Ischl so be aware there could be traffic.

If you are travelling after March next year you could consider staying in Bad Ischl over night.

Thursday next! Will I beat the tunnel closure?

Staying in Gmunden does detract the night from Salzburg, but I thought we would just be doubling back and this would be a better position to maximize the Lakes region and minimize the motorway.

We will stay in Salzburg Friday night and go on to Berchtesgaden and Munich Saturday.

Thank you for the advisories about travel times and congestion.
