Recommendations for Worthersee/ Vienna

Hi

Can any of you who have visited the Worthersee area of Austria tell me a little bit about the place. My partner and I are hoping to go there in September. We would like to stay near Worthersee lake. Can anyone tell me what this area is like? Is it a lively area? Are there many places to stay? What is the weather like in September?

We are also hoping to visit Vienna while we are in Austria. Our whole trip will be about one week. We would like to spend 1-2 days in Vienna and the rest in Worthersee lake. Is it possible to do this trip by train /bus?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi Raquel - we live in Carinthia and it is a wonderful place to visit. Not just round the lakes but up in the mountains too of course! September is probably the most stable month for weather with temps mostly still up in the mid 20's and plenty of sunshine on average. Lake Worth is surrounded by places to stay and by September will be relatively quiet again after the busy main season has finished. The liveliest area is probably Velden where the casino is.Our tip - stay somewhere where you get a Kaernten card in the deal - this will save you loads of money! http://www.kaerntencard.at/en/

You can get a train from Klagenfurt to Vienna or fly from Klagenfurt airport. The train can be booked online at http://www.oebb.at/en. Hope that helps!

Thank you for your reply. Would you have any recommendations for somewhere to stay in this area? We are looking for somewhere reasonable but also where we can swim in the lakes. I have seen a few places online but they are quiet expensive.

Thanks

Raquel

As our Gasthof is quite a way away (the Malta Valley above Spittal an der Drau) I am not especially familiar with the accommodation available in that area, which is just about the most expensive in Carinthia. One tip would be to go for a 'Gasthof' or 'Pension' rather than a 'Hotel'. Austrians tend to categorise everything in a way that is unfamiliar to the rest of us, so the smaller, usually family run, accommodations are usually at the cheaper end of the market but often just as comfortable and far more genuinely Austrian. A quick word of warning - most of the places you can swim in the Austrian lakes are privately owned. so unless you book something that has its own piece of shoreline, the entry to the 'Strandbad' will be an additional expense.
