Castles in Austria

I thought I had read somewhere of a full day self-drive of seeing the castles. Any one know of it and which are the "not to miss" castles.

I will be traveling to Austria next May and would love to stay in a castle, like we did in Germany. We hope to visit Salzburg, Vienna, and Innsbruck for sure. We will have 2 couples touring the country together. Any ideas?

The Salzburg castle is brilliant..I loved the view of the Werfen castle, I saw it from the train, and it looked neat.

No idea what you visited in Germany. Hopefully you wont mean Neuschwanstein as this is not really a castle but a fantasy of a mad king

@ tripofthemonth

As you're fairly new to TA I thought I'd point out that you should never reopen very old, dormant threads - TA discourage this. Always better to start a new thread which will get you maximum attention.

I love the castle from Where Eagles Dare. A proper castle.

I believe the question posed in #1 asks about castles with accomodations.

Many of these exist in Austria.

Some of my favorites - in the Wachau close to the Danube- about 1 hour from Vienna

just outside of Muhldorf above the Danube about 5 kilometers.

Huge entrance doorway - breakfast in the Knights Hall- much good restoration including a chapel.

Between Innsbruck and Salzburg

much restoration each guest room is different - fine garden park

Easy access to the Autobahn for touring purposes.

Schloss Rosenau

in Lower Austria - home to freemason museum- fine dining country atmosphere

Like wine

Schloss Kapfenstein

great views in Styria wine country

own winery - excellent food.
